In many distribution and engineering planning groups, staff with substantially varying skill sets employ a diverse set of tools to perform a variety of tasks. Frequently, these tools do not work seamlessly with the utility’s GIS platform, creating redundant data management processes, duplication of efforts, and workflow backlogs. More often than not, this creates costly project management headaches and inefficiency.
At Schneider Electric, we offer Designer to help you overcome these challenges. This robust design, workflow, and asset management tool was created to meet the specific needs of medium and large electric distribution utilities.
Designer streamlines your design, estimating, construction, and as-built workflow processes. In doing so, it supports all of your viewing and analysis requirements, eliminating the need to manage multiple data models. Because it is a fully-integrated extension of the popular ArcFM platform and operates on the same GIS data model, Designer reduces your cost of ownership. It also allows you to integrate design and planning work with other important, GIS-driven applications, such as your outage management system (OMS) and distribution management system (DMS).
With Designer, you get an engineering solution that drives bottom-line project design and construction improvements, while supporting better data management and transparency across your larger enterprise.

Graphic design and so much more
Don’t let the name fool you: Designer is much more than a graphic layout tool. It is an
integrated project management system that allows you to create construction work
sketches and prepare cost estimates. It does this through seamless access to your
work management system (WMS) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools —
providing detailed work request, scheduling, and materials cost information.
Designer establishes a single point of entry for all asset information, and includes
a comprehensive set of construction drawing tools, compatible unit management
functions, and engineering tools. With Designer, your staff can conduct low voltage
circuit analysis, perform structural analysis, optimize underground residential
developments, plan cable pulling, and properly plan overhead line construction.

construction, and as-built workflow processes.
3. Throughout the project life cycle, Designer keeps the
entire project organized and up-to-date, managing
both the design documents and asset data. All
compatible units, extended data, work locations, and
graphic work are stored with the design, including
records of installs, removes, and transfers. You can
even account for external factors, such as hot or cold
weather, heavy traffic, or contract crews.
Designer also gives you tools to create, control,
and manage multiple designs, design versions,
work requests, and input from multiple employees.
Within the GIS database, you may view, query, and
edit designs without copying files on the network.
Designer comes standard with Workflow Manager,
a flexible workflow process tool that can operate as
a stand alone or an integration point in your work
management system.
Powerful engineering and analysis tools
Because your designs’ engineering integrity is
paramount, Designer delivers a broad set of
engineering analysis tools to ensure quality, including:
• Overhead Design Analysis (OHDA) analyzes
your design materials’ structural integrity and
ensures that your design meets safety rules
and regulations. It combines sag and tension
calculations, pole load calculations, safety
regulations, and GIS in one application.
• Secondary (low voltage) circuit analysis
determines whether your design violates
voltage drop, flicker, motor starting, or transformer
loading rules.
• Design Optimization facilitates interactive design
with optimization and automation tools, taking into
consideration site conditions, design parameters,
and exclusion zones. It supports parcel aggregation
and optimal sizing and placement of transformers,
conductors, and services. This helps you to reduce
costs and avoid excess materials.
• Compatible Unit Administrator and Compatible
Unit Filter tools support extensive compatible unit
(CU) needs. The Compatible Unit Administrator
streamlines creation and management of CUs and
CU filters in one place. CU referencing ensures
that modifications are reflected in all favorites that
reference the modified CU. The Compatible Unit
Filter simplifies the location of CUs using filters and
saves often-used searches for easy retrieval.
With its powerful data management and quality
assurance features, Designer is the ideal application
for all of your design needs, from simple to very
complex projects.
GIS integration saves money and time
Designer is an extension of the ArcFM environment,
so it works on the same data model as your GIS,
greatly reducing implementation and maintenance
costs. This integration creates a single point of data
entry to eliminate time, cost, and errors related
to duplicate entries or data conversions from one
system to another.
It also enables automation of updates and workflow,
so when work orders and design revisions are
posted, your GIS data is also updated. This greatly
reduces backlog in your GIS system, allowing current
information to be retrieved or supplied to other
mission critical applications, such as OMS and DMS.
