Analysis of Dashman Company Case
1. Identification of The Problem
Mr. Post, newly recruited by Dashman Company as VP of Purchasing Department
wants to centralise the activities of the department which was otherwise decentralized
and taken care by respective unit heads. He tries to impose, through a letter to all unit
heads, that any bigger purchase requires reporting to H.O. at least a week in advance.
Although this letter doesn’t have any desired effect and things continue to be same as
usual due to some of the following reasons:
Resistance to Change
- It is very difficult for the Plant executives to give up their power
which they had been exercising over the years.
Lack of Effective Communication
- Mr. Post has not communicated effectively about the consequences
of non-compliance of his letter. Also,he had ignored the advice of
his experienced assistant to personally communicate the decision to
Plant executives which must be the way things work in company.
Lack of Effective Leadership
- The actions of Mr. Post were not taken seriously as there were
neither any proper follow ups nor any penalties for Non-
Compliance mentioned.
Inappropriately Timed Decision
- The New plan was adopted only three weeks before the peak
buying season making it more difficult for the Plant executives to
comply with the new plan.

Difficult to Notify all negotiations
- It is practically not possible to notify all the negotiations a week
before, since many negotiations may take place at last moment.
Problem of Materials Scarcity is not at all unit level
- These measures were irrelevant to those plant executives, who do
not face the same problem at unit level which the company faces
overall at organisational level.
2. Establishment of The Problem
Authority taken away from plant managers
- When it comes to power and position, it would be very difficult for
the Plant Executives to give up their authority which they had been
exercising over the years.
No Deadlines & No Follow-Ups
- Neither any follow-up was done by Mr. Post nor any deadline was
mentioned in letter sent to Plant executives, which has further
motivated the Plant executives to not comply with the new plan.
3. Objective Related To the problem
Ensuring Combined efforts to best serve the interest of the company.
- To ensure Cooperation of the plant executives and timely reporting
of the purchases as per the plan made by Mr.Post and approved by
BOD in order to ensure that each plant secures the optimum supply
of materials and thereby serving the interest of the company more
effectively and efficiently.

4. Generation of Alternatives
Alternative 1 - To personally communicate with every plant managers.
Alternative 2 -To make employees feel more involved in decision making
process.
Alternative 3 - Set up a Centralised Meeting with Plant Executives
5. Development of the criteria
Criteria 1 – Connection
- Since the plan was not taken seriously by the plant executives, it is
essential that the VP shall change the way of his communication of
the plan to the company.
Criteria 2 – Value
- The importance of the employees in the organisation should be
made realised to them by acquainting them with the reasons for the
implementation of the plan
Criteria 3 – Involvement
- Inviting feedbacks from the plant executives and then changing the
strategy as per feedbacks received.
6. Evaluation of Alternatives against Criteria

7. Prioritisation of the Alternatives
To ensure that the centralised reporting plan of Mr. Post is implemented
and well co-operated by the Plant executives, he should prioritise his
actions as per the following alternatives:
8. Action Plan
Firstly, Mr. Post shall visit each of the Plant Executives and have a One-
to-One discussion about the new centralised process, take feedback from
them and then access the situation.
Then, he can involve these plant executives to modify the plan as per their
special requirements which are in accordance with the Company’s
objectives.
Thereafter, once Mr. Post is acquainted with all the barriers faced by these
Plant executives for not cooperating with the proposed plan, he shall set up
a centralised meeting with all the executives to discuss the issue and take
feedback from them for effective implementation of the plan.
9. Contingency plan
If the alternatives don’t work, then the VP can approach the BOD to change
the entire structure of the company, where all the material requirements of
the plants are to be reported first to the Head Office and once the
authorisation is passed by the HO, the funds are released to the plants for
the purchase of materials. In this way, the units will not have a choice and
they will have to route all the decisions through the head office only.
