2. According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), "Hygiene refers to conditions and
practices that help to maintain health and
prevent the spread of diseases." Personal
hygiene refers to maintaining the body's
cleanliness.
3. Infectious
diseases
● An infectious disease is a
disease that is caused by the
invasion of a host by agents
whose activities harm the host's
tissues (that is, they cause
disease) and can be transmitted
to other individuals (that is, they
are infectious).
4. 1. Microorganisms that are capable of causing disease are called pathogens.
Note: Most microorganisms do not cause disease. In fact, many probably provide some protection
against harmful microorganisms
2. A true pathogen is an infectious agent that causes disease in virtually any susceptible host.
Opportunistic pathogens are potentially infectious agents that rarely cause disease in individuals with
healthy immune systems.
3. The terms "infection" and "disease" are not synonymous. An infection results when a pathogen
invades and begins growing within a host. Disease results only if and when, as a consequence of the
invasion and growth of a pathogen, tissue function is impaired.
5. There are five major types of infectious agents:
1. Bacteria
2. Viruses
3. Fungi
4. Protozoa
5. Helminths
6. In addition, a new class of infectious agents, the prions, has
recently been recognized
7. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

● Chills and sweats.
● Change in cough or a new cough.
● Sore throat or new mouth sore.
● Shortness of breath.
● Nasal congestion.
