2. What is a Composite?
• Two or more chemically distinct material which when combined have
improved properties over the individual material.
• Composites can be Natural or Synthetic
• It is combination of two material

4. Polymer Matrix Composites
• It is a composite material composed of a variety of short or
continuous fibres bound together by an organic polymer matrix.
• Matrix materials are usually Thermosets and Thermoplastics –
Polyester, Epoxy, Silicon, Rubber
• Reinforcing fibres are Glass, Graphite, Boron

5. Metal Matrix Composites
• It is a composite with at least two constituent parts one being the
metal and other being a metal or material like ceramic or organic
compound
• It is made by dispersing a reinforcing material into the metal matrix
• Commonly used matrices are Aluminium, Titanium, Nickel.

10. Conclusion
• Composite materials have enormous potential, but the composite
industry will need to demonstrate their advantages for each
application and compete with advocates of metals.
• They will never completely replace metals.
• There would appear to be significant future opportunities for
composites in the automotive industry, especially if one considers
their potential advantages compared to metals.
