5 Basic Questions
Most students want to learn Spanish so they communicate and begin
relationships with a wider variety of people. But how can we do that?
We will consider five basic questions that will help you get to know
people. They are simple questions with simple answers and provide
information so you can ask more questions.
The Questions!
What is your name? Cual es tu nombre?
Where do you live? Donde vives?
What do you do? En que trabajas?
Are you married? Estas casado/a?
Where are you from? De donde eres?
First, we will practice pronunciation, so you can feel comfortable and confident asking
these questions to others.
*PRACTICE HOW TO SAY EACH QUESTION WITH CORRECT
PRONUNCIATION*
How to respond to each question
• To continue, we will write down your answers to each question in
English. Then we will translate those answers, talk about vocabulary,
and practice responding to these five questions in Spanish.
• *STUDENT WRITES ANSWER IN ENGLISH, YOU
TRANSLATE, THEN PRACTICE SAYING THE TRANSLATED
ANSWER WITH THE STUDENT*
Practicing Comprehension
• Finally, I would like you to ask me each question one by one in
SPANISH, and I will respond in SPANISH so we can practice
comprehension skills
• *ALLOW STUDENT TO ASK YOU A QUESTION. GIVE A
SIMPLE ANSWER. ASK “WHAT DO YOU
UNDERSTAND” EXPLAIN ANY VOCABULARY THEY HAVE
QUESTIONS ABOUT*
Food for thought
• This is an excellent start for getting to know someone. But, how can
we continue a conversation after going through these basic questions?
• To continue our lesson, we will consider how to follow up each
question.
• As your homework assignment, come up with 5 natural follow up
questions for each basic questions. Try to translate them into Spanish.
We will discuss your answers and other options in our next lesson.
