Business School Outcomes
1. Business School Outcomes: The Employer’s Perspective
We listened to you . . . Tomorrow’s leaders for today’s employers.
The School of Business at Spalding University surveyed 64 local employers – both large and
small – in various industries to determine the educational and leadership needs for the future of
employer development and talent. The top 5 skills employers are seeking include the ability to:
1. Work as a team
2. Make decisions and solve problems
3. Plan, organize and prioritize work
4. Communicate verbally with people inside and outside of the organization
5. Obtain and process information and data
Spalding University has listened to local employers and adjusted its curriculum to meet these
skills while building future community leaders. It provides “real-life” courses with insight from
business leaders. As an Advisory Board member it has been impressive to experience the
changes within the Master’s of Business Communication (MSBC) graduate program that tie
directly to the needs of the business community. It’s about how to implement ideas and theory
into real business situations focusing on hands-on organizational leadership.
When companies hire, they seek an individual who has the ability to lead as well as be a team
player. A person who can make decisions and solve problems while communicating with people
both internally and externally. New people who can process information and understand how it
relates to the organization and to the solution. And finally, someone who can influence others
with the “soft skills” needed to communicate and lead in today’s corporate environment.
Spalding University’s MSBC graduates . . . the degree beyond the MBA . . . making the
leadership transition.
