2. Introduction
• Function of cerebellum is to coordinate, by
synergistic action, all reflex and voluntary
muscular activity
• Lesions, tumours in cerebellar hemisphere
gives rise to signs and symptoms on the same
side of the body
• Signs and symptoms include
3. Hypotonia
• Decreased muscle tone
• Excessive moment at the
terminal joints due to loss
simple stretch reflex
• Due to loss of Dentate and
Interposed nuclei
4. Alteration of Gait
• Gait is deviation
from normal
walking
• During walk,
patient lurches and
staggers towards
the affected side
5. Ataxia
• Disturbance in voluntary
moment
• Irregular and weak muscle
contraction
• Tremor during fine moments
• Gait abnormality
6. Dysdiadochokinesia
• Inability to perform
alternating moments
rapid and regularly
• During supination and
pronation the moments
are slow, jerky and
incomplete
7. Reflex disturbance
• Loss of influence on stretch reflux
• Movement produced by tendon reflexes
tend to continue for longer period than
normal
• Pendular Knee reflex , due to series of flexion
and extension
8. Nystagmus
• Involuntary oscillation
• Ataxia of ocular muscles
• Rhythmic oscillation on
both sides Pendullar
nystagmus
• Quicker in one direction
Jerk nystagmus
10. Vermis Syndrome
• Dandy Walker malformation
• Meduloblastoma of the vemis involving
floculonodular lobe
• Influences midline structures
• Muscle incoordination of head and neck
• Tendency of falling forward and backward
