Deepavali is the Hindu festival of lights celebrated annually to commemorate the return of King Rama to his kingdom after 14 years in exile. On the night of his return, the people of Ayodhya lit lamps to light the way for the king since it was a moonless night, starting the tradition of lighting lamps during Deepavali. Deepavali celebrations include cleaning and decorating homes with rangoli patterns, exchanging gifts and sweets, lighting diyas and other lamps, and offering prayers to celebrate health, wealth, and good fortune in the new year.
