INITIAL IDEA 1 - VIDEO GAME ADDICTION
This documentary is about video game addiction, and I will be exploring what video game
addiction is and the effects it can have on individuals.
I will be exploring the life of individuals who are addicted to video games in this documentary.
STRENGTHS
• Video game addiction is a current issue and is very interesting.
• Excellent reference to target audience, would appeal to them.
• Interviews planned out, which will make the documentary clear, good interview ideas e.g.
interview with psychologist.
• Locations well thought out.
• Documentary would have good visuals and cutaways. Filming could be very creative and
allow for a variety of cinematography.
• Good secondary and primary research. Both research are very detailed, so you have a
better understanding into what the issue is and this can be conveyed into the documentary,
• Documentary will be different and interesting as there is not a lot of documentaries on this
issue.
• Informative as not many people are aware of the impact that video game addiction can
have on individuals, some do not even know that you can become addicted to video
games.
• The idea is original as there is hardly any documentaries on this issue.
• Idea of montage will be very good, allows the audience to be engaged immediately.
WEAKNESSES
• Focuses on negative implications of video games and not positive aspects as video games
are not all bad.
• Possibly too much content, so documentary may feel rushed.
• Filming in Bradford is not very convenient as it is far.
• might not appeal to secondary target audience of young people as they may not believe
that they could become addicted to video games.
• Could be potentially boring
OPPORTUNITIES
• Could video individuals from a video game club
• Could explore the idea that people are using video games to recruit for the army as
controlling drones are very similar to using video game controllers.
• Contact professors from the department of Psychology from university that are more likely
to allow access for an interview, don’t try to contact universities from Russell group.
• Talk to video game stores, get cutaway footage, maybe get an interview
• ‘you could interview me as I play video games’
• Interviewing children, interviewing people who are not addicted to gain their perspective on
the issue.
THREATS
• Will you be allowed access to a university, must arrange in advance.
• Bradford is very far, travelling to visit a museum may be inconvenient.
• Are there other similar documentaries out there on the issue?
• May not be able to cover all content is the time.
• A possible treat is that in this documentary, I will be relying on a participant to be in the
documentary to introduce the idea and be a key part of the documentary. However, the
participant may have problems when I need to film etc.
• Another treat is that this documentary will also be reliant on individuals who are addicted to
video games, I will need to arrange and film in times they will be available.
• Image rights for documentary
• Target audience lower than age rating of game?
INITIAL IDEA 2 – ALCOHOL ADDICTION
This documentary will be about alcohol and the effects it has to the body as well as the
individual themselves. The documentary will explore the life of someone who has a alcohol
problem and how it has impacted them.
STRENGTHS
• Alcohol is a current issue and many people may not know the true effects drinking
excessively can have.
• The use of different perspectives, is very interesting, the use of exploring the life of
someone who has an alcohol problem as well as someone who has over-come alcohol
addiction, would really appeal to the target audience.
• It is a original idea- the audience can relate to the people in the documentary, therefore,
allows an emotional link to be made, making the documentary more appealing to them.
The documentary is quite personal as it explores the life of an alcoholic, which means the
audience may feel sympathy towards them, this makes it interesting to the audience.
• The use of facts and statistics is a good idea as it adds credibility to the documentary and
makes it more serious.
• Interviews planned out, which will make the documentary clear, good interview ideas e.g.
interview with alcoholic, family members and doctor.
• Good secondary and primary research
• Informative
WEAKNESSES
• ‘The topic has been covered before? How will you make it different?’ It will be difficult
to keep the idea original as there are many documentaries out there on alcohol
addiction.
• It has a very specific target audience, focusing on those who drink alcohol, so they
are aware of the effect it has on their body. Therefore, may not appeal to other people
who watch. The target audience is limited to individuals predominately around mid
20’s-40 years old.
• Possibly too much content, so documentary may feel rushed.
• Could be potentially boring, particularly young audiences if they watch as individuals
in the documentary will be of older age. The content will also be quite factual,
particularly when exploring the effects alcohol can have on the body, this again could
make the documentary boring.
• The topic of alcohol addiction is very broad, it will be difficult to maintain a specific
area that I would like to talk about in the documentary.
• Have not thought about the locations of the documentary.
OPPORTUNITIES
• Could film individuals that attend Alcohol Anonymous meetings
• Contact your GP as they know you and may be likely to participate in the documentary as it
will be beneficial to the public. Ask GP for facts and statistics on alcohol addiction
• Get cutaway footage of different types of alcoholic drinks in supermarkets, bars or
restaurants.
• Could possibly talk to your local pub, get there perspective on alcohol addiction.
• Could potentially have a voxpop at the end, asking them weather they know the true effects
that alcohol has on the body.
• Interview a friends uncle, who was an alcoholic.
THREATS
• Will you be allowed access to a doctor? Must arrange in advance.
• May be to similar to other documentaries on this issue
• May not be able to cover all content is the time.
• A possible treat is that in this documentary, I will be relying on a presenter/participant (ex-
alcoholic) to be in the documentary to introduce the idea and be a key part of the
documentary. However, the participant may have problems when I need to film etc.
• Another treat is that this documentary will also be reliant on individuals who are addicted to
alcohol, I will need to arrange and film in times they will be available. ‘will they be reliable?’
• The documentary is quite personal, for example filming an alcoholic and wanting to
interview family members. ‘Will family members want to be interviewed?’
INITIAL IDEA 3 - CYBER BULLYING
Within this documentary I will be exploring the issue of cyber bullying, its effects and
consequences. In this documentary I will be interviewing someone who was affected by
cyber bullying, as well as interviewing there parents. In order for the consequences of
cyber bullying to be explained I will be interviewing the police.
STRENGTHS
• Cyber bullying is a very current issue and many young people are affected by it, a lot of
individuals do not realise the effects that it has on the individual, so the documentary will
raise awareness and educate the audience. Therefore, it will be a very informative
documentary.
• Excellent reference to target audience, would appeal to them.
• Interviews planned out, which will make the documentary clear, good interview ideas e.g.
victim of cyber bullying, parents and expert views.
• Documentary would have good visuals and cutaways
• Secondary and primary research were in depth. Both research are very detailed, so you
have a better understanding into what the issue is and this can be conveyed into the
documentary,
• Documentary will be different and interesting and original as there is not many
documentaries which summarises the key elements in a short 10-15 minute documentary.
• Would appeal to my primary target audience f young people, as they may be affected by
the issue or know someone who is, the documentary will offer advice and help lines that
are available.
• Great contacts such as ‘Cyber smiles foundation’
• Would also appeal to secondary target audience of parents as they may not be aware of
cyber bullying.
WEAKNESSES
• Focus of the effects and consequences of cyber bullying, but would be interesting to
explore the causes.
• The topic of cyber bullying is very broad, it will be difficult to maintain a specific area that I
would like to talk about in the documentary. Therefore, the structure of the documentary
needs to be thought out more.
• Will you be able to film someone who was bullied from ‘cyber smile foundation’, what if they
change there mind. This is a potential weakness as the documentary is quite reliant on this
participant.
• Could be potentially boring.
• Would need to arrange meeting with school police in advance, as they may have a busy
schedule.
• Locations are still yet to be thought out.
OPPORTUNITIES
• Could get into contact with other cyber bullying campaigns and organisations, other than
‘cyber smiles foundation’.
• In order to make the documentary more original, I could film someone who has cyber-
bullied in the, if they would like to remain anonymous they could. But it would be interesting
to find out why people cyber bully.
• Get cutaway footage of many people walking in the street on phones and technology, could
do this in a shopping centre area.
• Could potentially have a voxpop at the end, asking they know the consequences of cyber
bullying. One possible question could be ‘Are you aware of the malicious communications
Act.
• By making this documentary I will be able to raise awareness of the issue. As I will be
providing advice and help lines, anyone who watches that is affected by this issue may go
out and seek help.
THREATS
• Are there other similar documentaries out there on the issue? How will yours be original?
• May not be able to cover all content is the time.
• A possible treat is that in this documentary, I will be relying on a presenter to be in the
documentary to introduce the idea and be a key part of the documentary. So I will need to
find a presenter that will be committed to being filmed and working properly alongside
myself.
• Another treat is that this documentary will also be reliant on individuals who are addicted to
cyber bullying, I will need to arrange and film in times they will be available.
• May be hard to film a variety of shots
• Very sensitive and personal issue, victim may not feel comfortable sharing this kind of
information.
• May not appeal to everyone because they are not able to relate to the situation.
INITIAL IDEA 4 - YOUNG CARERS
• This documentary will be exploring the life of a young carer. I will be exploring what a
young carer is and how it affects the. The main part of this documentary will be about a
specific young carer and what she does in her day to day life.
STRENGTHS
• The topic of young carers is a very relevant issue and many young people are affected by
it, a lot of young carers stay quite about being one and so the documentary will raise
awareness .
• Will be a very informative documentary.
• Excellent reference to target audience, would appeal to them.
• Documentary would have good visuals and cutaways, very creative footage can be
obtained, visuals of young carer doing daily routines.
• Secondary and primary research were in depth. Both research are very detailed, so you
have a better understanding into what the issue is and this can be conveyed into the
documentary,
• Documentary will be different and interesting and original as there is not many
documentaries out there on this topic.
• Would appeal to my primary target audience of young carers, who will be able to relate to
the young carers life that is being explored in the documentary. Therefore, this makes it
interesting for the audience.
WEAKNESSES
• ‘Do you have a specific young carer to film?’ If not then it could be hard to get a young carer to film. It is very personal and a
sensitive area a young carer may not be comfortable sharing this information s well as filming her daily life.
• It has a very specific target audience, focusing on young carer’s themselves, so they are aware that they can talk to people
and get help if needed. Therefore, may not appeal to other people who watch.
• The target audience is limited
• A lot on content to cover, the documentary may feel rushed
• Have not thought about the locations of the documentary. But filming a young carer at home throughout the entirety of the
documentary could be boring.
• Locations are not included, where will you film?
• Need to find some sort of ‘expert’ on this video, cant just film a young carer’s daily life throughout as it will be boring.
• Many documentaries on this topic focus on the life of a young carer, how will this one be different? The idea needs to be
thought out more, needs to be more developed at the moment could be potentially boring.
• Will it be voiceover, presenter led or participant?
OPPORTUNITIES
• Get into contact with organisations that provide help and support for young carers.
• Explore the idea of whether there is enough support out there from the government for
young carers. What can be done and how can they help?
• Could film at school, what does the school do to help young carers, if there are any within
the school
• Find out facts and statistics from organisations and experts rather than just internet. Also,
by including them it adds credibility to the documentary and highlights the importance of
the topic.
THREATS
• ‘Do you need permission to film residents who are being cared for?’
• ‘Will filming make the young carers life harder?’
• Individual with disability may not want me to film them, they may not feel comfortable.
• Permission to film young carers daily life
• May be stressful for the individual being cared for
• Another possible threat is that I will need a organised schedule regarding the time I will be
filming the young carer as she may be busy when I am free to film, so this will need to be
organised.

However, the participant may have problems when I need to film etc. • Another treat is that this documentary will also be reliant on individuals who are addicted to video games, I will need to arrange and film in times they will be available. • Image rights for documentary • Target audience lower than age rating of game?
  • 6. INITIAL IDEA 2 – ALCOHOL ADDICTION This documentary will be about alcohol and the effects it has to the body as well as the individual themselves. The documentary will explore the life of someone who has a alcohol problem and how it has impacted them.
  • 7. STRENGTHS • Alcohol is a current issue and many people may not know the true effects drinking excessively can have. • The use of different perspectives, is very interesting, the use of exploring the life of someone who has an alcohol problem as well as someone who has over-come alcohol addiction, would really appeal to the target audience. • It is a original idea- the audience can relate to the people in the documentary, therefore, allows an emotional link to be made, making the documentary more appealing to them. The documentary is quite personal as it explores the life of an alcoholic, which means the audience may feel sympathy towards them, this makes it interesting to the audience. • The use of facts and statistics is a good idea as it adds credibility to the documentary and makes it more serious. • Interviews planned out, which will make the documentary clear, good interview ideas e.g. interview with alcoholic, family members and doctor. • Good secondary and primary research • Informative
  • 8. WEAKNESSES • ‘The topic has been covered before? How will you make it different?’ It will be difficult to keep the idea original as there are many documentaries out there on alcohol addiction. • It has a very specific target audience, focusing on those who drink alcohol, so they are aware of the effect it has on their body. Therefore, may not appeal to other people who watch. The target audience is limited to individuals predominately around mid 20’s-40 years old. • Possibly too much content, so documentary may feel rushed. • Could be potentially boring, particularly young audiences if they watch as individuals in the documentary will be of older age. The content will also be quite factual, particularly when exploring the effects alcohol can have on the body, this again could make the documentary boring. • The topic of alcohol addiction is very broad, it will be difficult to maintain a specific area that I would like to talk about in the documentary. • Have not thought about the locations of the documentary.
  • 9. OPPORTUNITIES • Could film individuals that attend Alcohol Anonymous meetings • Contact your GP as they know you and may be likely to participate in the documentary as it will be beneficial to the public. Ask GP for facts and statistics on alcohol addiction • Get cutaway footage of different types of alcoholic drinks in supermarkets, bars or restaurants. • Could possibly talk to your local pub, get there perspective on alcohol addiction. • Could potentially have a voxpop at the end, asking them weather they know the true effects that alcohol has on the body. • Interview a friends uncle, who was an alcoholic.
  • 10. THREATS • Will you be allowed access to a doctor? Must arrange in advance. • May be to similar to other documentaries on this issue • May not be able to cover all content is the time. • A possible treat is that in this documentary, I will be relying on a presenter/participant (ex- alcoholic) to be in the documentary to introduce the idea and be a key part of the documentary. However, the participant may have problems when I need to film etc. • Another treat is that this documentary will also be reliant on individuals who are addicted to alcohol, I will need to arrange and film in times they will be available. ‘will they be reliable?’ • The documentary is quite personal, for example filming an alcoholic and wanting to interview family members. ‘Will family members want to be interviewed?’
  • 11. INITIAL IDEA 3 - CYBER BULLYING Within this documentary I will be exploring the issue of cyber bullying, its effects and consequences. In this documentary I will be interviewing someone who was affected by cyber bullying, as well as interviewing there parents. In order for the consequences of cyber bullying to be explained I will be interviewing the police.
  • 12. STRENGTHS • Cyber bullying is a very current issue and many young people are affected by it, a lot of individuals do not realise the effects that it has on the individual, so the documentary will raise awareness and educate the audience. Therefore, it will be a very informative documentary. • Excellent reference to target audience, would appeal to them. • Interviews planned out, which will make the documentary clear, good interview ideas e.g. victim of cyber bullying, parents and expert views. • Documentary would have good visuals and cutaways • Secondary and primary research were in depth. Both research are very detailed, so you have a better understanding into what the issue is and this can be conveyed into the documentary, • Documentary will be different and interesting and original as there is not many documentaries which summarises the key elements in a short 10-15 minute documentary. • Would appeal to my primary target audience f young people, as they may be affected by the issue or know someone who is, the documentary will offer advice and help lines that are available. • Great contacts such as ‘Cyber smiles foundation’ • Would also appeal to secondary target audience of parents as they may not be aware of cyber bullying.
  • 13. WEAKNESSES • Focus of the effects and consequences of cyber bullying, but would be interesting to explore the causes. • The topic of cyber bullying is very broad, it will be difficult to maintain a specific area that I would like to talk about in the documentary. Therefore, the structure of the documentary needs to be thought out more. • Will you be able to film someone who was bullied from ‘cyber smile foundation’, what if they change there mind. This is a potential weakness as the documentary is quite reliant on this participant. • Could be potentially boring. • Would need to arrange meeting with school police in advance, as they may have a busy schedule. • Locations are still yet to be thought out.
  • 14. OPPORTUNITIES • Could get into contact with other cyber bullying campaigns and organisations, other than ‘cyber smiles foundation’. • In order to make the documentary more original, I could film someone who has cyber- bullied in the, if they would like to remain anonymous they could. But it would be interesting to find out why people cyber bully. • Get cutaway footage of many people walking in the street on phones and technology, could do this in a shopping centre area. • Could potentially have a voxpop at the end, asking they know the consequences of cyber bullying. One possible question could be ‘Are you aware of the malicious communications Act. • By making this documentary I will be able to raise awareness of the issue. As I will be providing advice and help lines, anyone who watches that is affected by this issue may go out and seek help.
  • 15. THREATS • Are there other similar documentaries out there on the issue? How will yours be original? • May not be able to cover all content is the time. • A possible treat is that in this documentary, I will be relying on a presenter to be in the documentary to introduce the idea and be a key part of the documentary. So I will need to find a presenter that will be committed to being filmed and working properly alongside myself. • Another treat is that this documentary will also be reliant on individuals who are addicted to cyber bullying, I will need to arrange and film in times they will be available. • May be hard to film a variety of shots • Very sensitive and personal issue, victim may not feel comfortable sharing this kind of information. • May not appeal to everyone because they are not able to relate to the situation.
  • 16. INITIAL IDEA 4 - YOUNG CARERS • This documentary will be exploring the life of a young carer. I will be exploring what a young carer is and how it affects the. The main part of this documentary will be about a specific young carer and what she does in her day to day life.
  • 17. STRENGTHS • The topic of young carers is a very relevant issue and many young people are affected by it, a lot of young carers stay quite about being one and so the documentary will raise awareness . • Will be a very informative documentary. • Excellent reference to target audience, would appeal to them. • Documentary would have good visuals and cutaways, very creative footage can be obtained, visuals of young carer doing daily routines. • Secondary and primary research were in depth. Both research are very detailed, so you have a better understanding into what the issue is and this can be conveyed into the documentary, • Documentary will be different and interesting and original as there is not many documentaries out there on this topic. • Would appeal to my primary target audience of young carers, who will be able to relate to the young carers life that is being explored in the documentary. Therefore, this makes it interesting for the audience.
  • 18. WEAKNESSES • ‘Do you have a specific young carer to film?’ If not then it could be hard to get a young carer to film. It is very personal and a sensitive area a young carer may not be comfortable sharing this information s well as filming her daily life. • It has a very specific target audience, focusing on young carer’s themselves, so they are aware that they can talk to people and get help if needed. Therefore, may not appeal to other people who watch. • The target audience is limited • A lot on content to cover, the documentary may feel rushed • Have not thought about the locations of the documentary. But filming a young carer at home throughout the entirety of the documentary could be boring. • Locations are not included, where will you film? • Need to find some sort of ‘expert’ on this video, cant just film a young carer’s daily life throughout as it will be boring. • Many documentaries on this topic focus on the life of a young carer, how will this one be different? The idea needs to be thought out more, needs to be more developed at the moment could be potentially boring. • Will it be voiceover, presenter led or participant?
  • 19. OPPORTUNITIES • Get into contact with organisations that provide help and support for young carers. • Explore the idea of whether there is enough support out there from the government for young carers. What can be done and how can they help? • Could film at school, what does the school do to help young carers, if there are any within the school • Find out facts and statistics from organisations and experts rather than just internet. Also, by including them it adds credibility to the documentary and highlights the importance of the topic.
  • 20. THREATS • ‘Do you need permission to film residents who are being cared for?’ • ‘Will filming make the young carers life harder?’ • Individual with disability may not want me to film them, they may not feel comfortable. • Permission to film young carers daily life • May be stressful for the individual being cared for • Another possible threat is that I will need a organised schedule regarding the time I will be filming the young carer as she may be busy when I am free to film, so this will need to be organised.
