aboard ship :
Life is precious. It is everyone’s concern to preserve and maintain the
continuity of life.
. Study about first aid is to give further knowledge and skills
regarding taking care of person who met an accident aboard ship.
. We know that accidents happen any time without caution or without
warning. It’s better to take an extra care so that accidents may be
prevented if not totally eradicated.
. Be ready to help others and open your arms for their safety because
next time the life you save maybe your own. Let’s just always
remember life is not endangered if we always think about safety.
3. What is First Aid
First aid - is the emergency
treatment given to the ill or
injured person before professional
medical services can be obtained.
It is given to prevent death and
further injury.
4. Priorities of first aid
Preserve life .
Alleviate suffering .
Prevent the condition from
worsening .
Promote recovery .
6. PRIORITIES DEALING WITH FIRST AID
On finding casualty:
Ensure your own safety; if necessary remove casualty
from danger or danger from casualty.
Give immediate treatment to the casualty who is not
breathing/ or whose heart stopped, is bleeding
severely or unconscious - others can be treated later;
Send for help.
7. Three basic life-saving action to be given
immediately while waiting for trained person to
arrived
To give artificial respiration by the mouth
to nose/mouth method and heart
compressions.
To place unconscious casualty in the
unconscious position(recovery position).
To stop severe bleeding.
8. GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF FIRST AID ABOARD SHIP
Make rapid examination of the patient to assess responsiveness and the
extend of injury.
Check breathing, heart and look for serious bleeding.
if breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration.
if heart has stopped, give heart compression and artificial respiration (CPR)
.
Handle patient as little as gently as possible so as to prevent further
injuries and prevent further shock.
See that the patient put in the most comfortable position possible loosen
tight so that he can breath easily.
Always remember that it could be a great danger to life and one of the
main of first aid is to prevent this.
Do not give alcohol in any form.
Never consider anyone to be dead until you and others agree.
9. UNCONSCIOUS CASUALTY
How to check for breathing :
LOOK - FEEL - LISTEN
LOOK - FOR THE MOVEMENT OF CHEST AND
ABDOMEN.
FEEL - FOR AIR ON YOUR CHEEK.
LISTEN - FOR BREATHING WITH YOUR EAR OVER
THE MOUTH AND NOSE.
12. ASSESMENT OF BREATHING AND
HEART FUNCTION
IF UNCONSCIOUS AND BREATHING :
place casualty in unconscious(recovery) position.
No pillows should be used under the head.
Pull the leg and the arm on the side to which the side is facing, pull up the
chin.
