ARTIST’S PLAYGROUND SUMMER ARTS PROGRAM 2013
Children’s Art Program
9:00 am – 2:00 pm Monday - Friday
This program welcomes students ages 5-15 years old. Enrollment is limited to twelve students per
day. Instruction will begin at 9:00am, please schedule your student’s arrival accordingly. All class
materials are provided. Students are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate to the creative nature of
the program. Please label all personal items. Students should plan on taking home finished projects at
the end of each class period.
PLEASE NOTE: Students will take two meal breaks daily and are required to bring their own snacks
and lunches. The school’s “Snack Café” will also offer drinks, snacks and frozen treats for a nominal
fee.

At a Glance Summer Schedule
Evening Art Workshop & Open Studio
6:00 pm – 9:00 pm Monday - Wednesday
Since the children’s program fills the morning schedule at the Schoolhouse, this workshop and studio
time is for the students seeking an opportunity for individualized artistic guidance. Studio time will
include all materials, instruction, and plenty of support to guide you in your creative adventure!
Activity will compliment students of all skill levels. Instruction is offered in all areas and students will
have the opportunity to choose from any artistic discipline daily.

Children’s Art Program
Description of scheduled classes Ages 5-15
Week 1: June 17 – 21
Ceramic Arts… the studio experience
This week’s activities will introduce students to the
process of hand building, conceptual 3-D sculpture,
pottery, tile making & whistle crafting.
NOTE: All projects will require additional drying time
to ensure successful firing
Week 2: June 24-28
Drawing Studio
This week’s activities will introduce students to styles,
techniques, composition, development of color theory
and expression. An innovative week of original project
work!
Week 3: July 1 – 5
Decoupage Studio
Where handcraft and design imagery unite! This week’s
studio will explore graphic and illustrative techniques
as well as the craft of cut and paste. Two and three
dimensional project work will also incorporate mosaic
and collage skills.
Week 4: July 8 – 12
Painting Studio
Where students experience a fluid world of imagery,
color and design. Students will be instructed in the use
of tempera, watercolor, acrylic and oil paint, as well as
other special techniques.

Week 5: July 15 – 19
Sculpture Fabrication Studio
This week students will first design and create
miniature models for their larger original sculptures.
Pliable, textural materials will include wire, mesh,
screen, netting, rope and cordage. Instruction and
materials will inspire innovation and creativity!
Week 6: July 22 – 26
Expressive Arts Studio
Back by popular demand, this week’s activities will
provide the expressive artist an outlet for their creativity
as well as support and resource to further their interests
and skills. Activities include monologue, mime, mask
making and dramatic improvisation. Students will be
encouraged to create and develop character, dialogue,
simple costume and set design.
Week 7: July 29 – Aug 2
Textile Arts Studio
Weaving, knotting, sewing, beading, applique, fabric
painting, printing and pattern making! A full week of
studio-based creative crafts and original projects is sure
to inspire the young designer. Instruction will offer
students the opportunity to develop and apply new
skills!
Week 8: August 5 – 9
Miniature Sculpture Studio
Projects this week are sure to engage the artist’s
imagination and conceptual field of expression.
Instruction in polymer clay technique, composition,
and application will encourage original project work.

Afternoon Academic and Tutorial Program

This program provides students with individualized instruction and tutorial in a small group setting.
Emphasis is given to individual planning and goal setting. Students, their families and administration
will work together to create goals appropriate for the duration of the student’s enrollment. All goals
will be structured from individualized assessment. Appropriate curriculum and learning activity will
be chosen according to these goals. Individualized planning will support the needs of each student’s
program. This program will ensure successful acquisition, goal attainment and cater to each student’s
needs during the learning process.

The program enrolls six students per day. All class materials and
curriculum are provided.
Instruction offered in the following areas; one or more areas of
academic emphasis may be integrated in planning.

At the Progressive Schoolhouse, we provide our students with an
immediate reception of acceptance, acknowledgement, support
and validation. Our actions as teachers demonstrate the value of
nurturing trusting and respectful relationships with our students.
The art studio is set up to accommodate the developmental
needs of our multi-age classroom. The studio experience
promotes a structure that respects
each individual in his or her
creative process.
