This document outlines the proposed schedule and events for an orientation for new drama students between August 31st and September 4th, 2015. The goals are to welcome students, excite them about the training and opportunities, and introduce them to faculty, administrators, and resources. Events include a pancake breakfast, faculty workshops, advisor meetings, workshops on holistic drama training and being a drama student in NYC, and a drama department orientation. The schedule provides locations and times for each event each day.

CHAIRS’ PANCAKE BREAKFAST
Monday, August 31, 2015
10:00am -12:00pm
Riese Student Lounge and Burrows Theatre
"GOAL: Our first Department wide event, the Chairs’ Pancake Breakfast provides an opportunity to introduce
students to the Drama Leadership in a friendly and casual setting.
"• The Chairs will “cook” and “serve” a pancake breakfast to students.
• Either a catering team and/or staff volunteers will do the cooking and Chairs will help serve and chat with
students.
• Students will get to mingle with each other over breakfast.
• There is a metaphorical take-away that the Drama Department is here to serve our students.
"
FACULTY WORKSHOPS
Monday, August 31, 2015
12:00pm - 1:30pm
721 Broadway, Drama Studios & Theaters
"GOAL: To encourage cross-studio student mingling while introducing students to the wide variety of
training available in the Drama Department.
"• Students from various studios mix together in exploration with faculty.
• Representatives from all studios (internal and external) and TS faculty lead 90 minute workshops.
• Due to the truncated schedule, we can only host one session of workshops this year.
"
BROWN BAG LUNCHES
Monday, August 31, 2015
12:00pm - 1:00pm
Riese Student Lounge
"GOAL: To give new students an opportunity to mingle with upper-level students and ask questions.
"• Students pick up their lunch and bring it to the Riese Lounge.
• Tables and chairs will be set-up in small groupings; at each table will be an upper-level student who will
lead a discussion with incoming students.
• This could also be done as a panel discussion and Q & A.

DRAMA DEPARTMENT ORIENTATION
Thursday, September 3, 2015
Eisner Lubin Auditorium
"GOAL: Welcoming first years into our community through a high-energy and fun event that supports
department unity.
"• Pre-Show: As students enter, music is playing (possibly a REMU DJ), t-shirts are passed out (students are
encouraged to put them on), purple balls are bounced through the audience, the energy builds and it feels
like a dance party.
• Introductions: Taylor Swift’s “Welcome to New York” plays and Chris Andersson comes out onto the
stage. A high-energy “Welcome to New York Class of 2019!” the music is lowered slightly (but still
underscoring) as Chris introduces the department (all wearing the same t-shirt the students have on.) It’s
fast, high-energy, like announcing players on a football team, people are clapping to the beat. The
advisors run up from the audience to the stage “It’s your’s advisors! Scott, Carl, Katrina, etc.” “Class of
2019 are you ready to meet your Studio Heads? From Atlantic Acting School it’s Mary McCann!” The stage
continues to fill with faculty and staff ending with the Associate Chairs and then the Chair.
• Welcome: Ted welcomes the new class and invites them to take their seats. He introduces the next
segment.
• Group activity: All 425 students will be led in a group community building activity.
• Associate Chair of Professional Training - encouraging words and intro to next segment.
• Video montage: A video plays of upper-level students offering their best advice to the incoming class.
Videos (shot on smartphones and computers) will be collected and edited from student submissions this
summer.
• Associate Chair of External Outreach - encouraging words and intro to next segment.
• Alumni Speaker: Ted introduces our Alumni Speaker, someone notable and funny (i.e. Casey Wilson or
Gina Rodriguez). The speaker would hopefully be there in person, but could also participate via video
conference or recording. The alum would be asked to speak about the Tisch Drama Community and how
it helped them pursue their dreams.
• Associate Chair of Production & Performance - encouraging words and intro to next segment.
• Pop-up Performances: A current upper-level student would take the stage and begin a short
performance, then other students would pop up from the audience, the balcony, etc. and perform. Maybe
they are performances from each studio or from various production areas (i.e. something from a stage
works show, something from a student works show, from a studio show, from a student directed show.)
• Keynote Address: Ted closes out the event with a keynote address on an inspiring topic.
"T-shirt Design
The helvetica font shirts are ubiquitous. Grace Dobush from How Design explains “They work like cultural
shibboleths—if you get the reference, you and the T-shirt wearer are automatically cool with each other.” In
an effort to strengthen our community, why not give out our own version of this cultural shibboleth featuring
drama insider-slang versions of our studio names. See examples below of the original shirts and my rough
design.
