  18. 18. Liam Stapleton Toynbee School Subtracting numbers made easy! 7 mins
  19. 19. Numbers Easy Subtraction! This technique avoids the need to subtract a large number from a small number, always a difficult task for students. The column method requires we borrow, carry …. and get confused!
  20. 20. Numbers 301 – 57 is a very awkward calculation…
  21. 21. Numbers So lets make it easier! Place the numbers in a column as normal 301 57
  22. 22. Numbers . 301 57 +3 = +3 = Increase BOTH numbers by 3 so 57 becomes 60 304 60 +40 = +40 = Increase BOTH numbers by 40 so 60 becomes 100 344 100 Now subtract 100 from 344! Answer is 244! EASY!!
  23. 23. Numbers . 423 78 738 589 +2 = +2 = +1 = +1 = 425 80 739 590 +20 = +20 = +10 = +10 = 445 100 345 749 600 149
  24. 24. Numbers . 751 224 +6 = +6 = 1767 538 +2 = +2 = 757 230 527 1769 540 1229 Each increase, check to see if the subtraction can be carried out without another increase.
  25. 25. Numbers . This techniques works for calculating negative numbers too. You just need to work upside down! 267 523 +3 = +3 = 270 526 -252 300 556 +30 = +30 =
