• Isaac Newton, in full Sir Isaac Newton, born December 25, 1642,
Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England—died March 20, 1727, London, English
physicist and mathematician, who was the culminating figure of the
Scientific Revolution of the 17th century.
3. His early years.
• His father was a wealthy, uneducated
farmer who died three months
before Newton was born. Newton's
mother remarried and he was left in the
care of his grandmother. He attended
Free Grammar school.
4. His education.
• Though Newton did not excel in school, he did earn the opportunity to
attend Trinity College Cambridge where he wanted to study law. His
mother refused to pay for his education so while at college he worked as a
servant to pay his way. Newton also kept a journal where he was able to
express his ideas on various topics.
5. His sibling and family.
Isaac Newton came from a family of farmers but never knew his father, also
named Isaac Newton, who died in October 1642, three months before his
son was born. ... Upon the death of his stepfather in 1653, Newton lived in
an extended family consisting of his mother, his grandmother, one half-
brother, and two half-sisters.

• He did invent reflecting lenses for telescopes, which produced clearer
images in a smaller telescope compared with the refracting models of the
time. In his later years, he developed anti-counterfeiting measures for
coins, including the ridges you see on quarters today. Among his biggest
"inventions" was calculus.
