Lean manufacturing notes
1. Globle challenges / Lean manu. As solution
Challenge #1: Shortage of skilled labor
To tackle this challenge, manufacturers need to plan their strategic workforce smartly. Also, they should focus more on recruiting
millennials who have technical skills and ‘know-how’. Additionally, there must be an emphasis on STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and math) skills to streamline recruitment initiatives.
Challenge #2: Management of project
Challenge #3: Analyzing the data
Implementing an IoT solution designed to help maintenance of predictive analytics, as well as remote monitoring, can help
companies in the manufacturing industry to analyze their data in real-time. Also, this can help in predicting the time when
maintenance of an asset is required. Consequently, manufacturers can shift from replace or repair maintenance model to a fix
and predict model.

25. Andon= Andon in Lean manufacturing is a system designed to alert operators and
managers of problems in real time so that corrective measures can be taken
immediately.
A visual and/or audible communication system that notifies everyone of abnormalities in a process when
support or attention is needed. This can be triggered automatically or manually by a machine or person.
It could be a:
cord that is manually pulled (often seen on an assembly line)
light (red, yellow and green colors)
flag (also red, yellow and green) that is placed in a holder or flipped to signal a problem
Andon is a principle and is also a typical tool to apply the Jidoka principle in Lean Manufacturing —
Jidoka is also referred to as 'autonomation', which means the highlighting of a problem, as it occurs,
in order to immediately introduce countermeasures to prevent re-occurrence.
An Andon is a system to aid the information flow regarding the status of the production system. Operators
pull a cord or press a switch if there are upcoming or actual problems. ... This information is then shown through
lights, numbers, and sounds to alert others about the problems.
26. Supermarket Pull System
The most basic and widespread type, also known as a fill-up or
replenishment pull system. In a supermarket pull system each process has
a store -- a supermarket -- that holds an amount of each product it
produces. Each process simply produces to replenish what is withdrawn
from its supermarket.
