Al realizar operaciones de suma o resta con números producto de mediciones, la precisión en la
respuesta no puede ser mayor que la del término menos preciso involucrado en la operación. Por
tal razón, las operaciones de suma o resta se deben iniciar con el redondeo las cantidades, de tal
manera que todas posean el mismo número de decimales que el número que menos decimales
tenga.
A continuación, te invito a ver y analizar unos ejemplos.

Ejemplo 1.
Sumar las siguientes masas:
𝟐𝟏, 𝟖𝟗𝟔 𝒌𝒈
+ 𝟗, 𝟑 𝒌𝒈
𝟓, 𝟓𝟓 𝒌𝒈
Antes de realizar la operación matemática se debe identificar el número con menos decimales, en este caso
sería el 9,3 kg, el cual posee un solo decimal; seguidamente, todas las otras cantidades se deben redondear a
un decimal, para luego realizar la suma:
𝟐𝟏, 𝟗 𝒌𝒈
+ 𝟗, 𝟑 𝒌𝒈
𝟓, 𝟔 𝒌𝒈
36,8 kg
La suma de las masas sería 36,8 kg.
Ejemplo 2:
Restar las siguientes longitudes:
16,895 m – 3,30 m
Antes de realizar la operación matemática se debe identificar el número con menos decimales, en este
caso sería el 3,30 m, el cual posee dos decimales; seguidamente, la otra cantidad se debe redondear a
dos decimales, para luego realizar la resta:
16,90 m – 3,30 m = 13,60 m
El resultado de la resta sería 13,60 m.
Por otro lado, al realizar operaciones de multiplicación, división, potencia o radicación con números
productos de mediciones, el resultado debe tener la misma cantidad de cifras significativas que la
medida con menor cantidad de cifras significativas. Para estos casos, se debe primero realizar la
operación matemática y posteriormente redondear el resultado.

Ejemplo 3:
Multiplicar las siguientes medidas:
𝟒, 𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝒎 𝒙 𝟏𝟐, 𝟑 𝒎
En este caso se debe iniciar con la realización de la operación matemática, por lo cual:
𝟒, 𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝒎 𝒙 𝟏𝟐, 𝟑 𝒎 = 𝟓𝟔, 𝟒𝟒𝟒 𝟕 𝒎𝟐
Seguidamente, se debe redondear el resultado a la cantidad de cifras significativas adecuadas,
al analizar la cantidad de cifras significativas de las medidas iniciales, se obtiene que:
4,589 m (posee 4 cifras significativas);
12,3 m (posee 3 cifras significativas)
Por lo cual, el resultado se debe redondear a 3 cifras significativas, es decir:
𝟒, 𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝒎 𝒙 𝟏𝟐, 𝟑 𝒎 = 𝟓𝟔, 𝟒 𝒎𝟐
Ejemplo 4:
Dividir las siguientes medidas:
(40,5 km) ÷ (2,3 h) = ?
En este caso se debe iniciar con la realización de la operación matemática, por lo cual: (40,5
km) ÷ (2,3 h) = 17,608 695 65 km/h
Seguidamente, se debe redondear el resultado a la cantidad de cifras significativas adecuadas,
al analizar la cantidad de cifras significativas de las medidas iniciales, se obtiene que:
40,5 m (posee 3 cifras significativas)
2,3 m (posee 2 cifras significativas)
Por lo cual, el resultado se debe redondear a 2 cifras significativas, es decir:
(40,5 km) ÷ (2,3 h) = 18 km/h
De manera similar, se debe proceder con las operaciones de potencia y radicación.

  • 2. Al realizar operaciones de suma o resta con números producto de mediciones, la precisión en la respuesta no puede ser mayor que la del término menos preciso involucrado en la operación. Por tal razón, las operaciones de suma o resta se deben iniciar con el redondeo las cantidades, de tal manera que todas posean el mismo número de decimales que el número que menos decimales tenga. Sumar las siguientes masas: 𝟐𝟏, 𝟖𝟗𝟔 𝒌𝒈 + 𝟗, 𝟑 𝒌𝒈 𝟓, 𝟓𝟓 𝒌𝒈 Antes de realizar la operación matemática se debe identificar el número con menos decimales, en este caso sería el 9,3 kg, el cual posee un solo decimal; seguidamente, todas las otras cantidades se deben redondear a un decimal, para luego realizar la suma: 𝟐𝟏, 𝟗 𝒌𝒈 + 𝟗, 𝟑 𝒌𝒈 𝟓, 𝟔 𝒌𝒈 36,8 kg La suma de las masas sería 36,8 kg.

Ejemplo 2: Restar las siguientes longitudes: 16,895 m – 3,30 m Antes de realizar la operación matemática se debe identificar el número con menos decimales, en este caso sería el 3,30 m, el cual posee dos decimales; seguidamente, la otra cantidad se debe redondear a dos decimales, para luego realizar la resta: 16,90 m – 3,30 m = 13,60 m El resultado de la resta sería 13,60 m. Por otro lado, al realizar operaciones de multiplicación, división, potencia o radicación con números productos de mediciones, el resultado debe tener la misma cantidad de cifras significativas que la medida con menor cantidad de cifras significativas. Operaciones matemáticas básicas y cifras significativas Ejemplo 3: Multiplicar las siguientes medidas: 𝟒, 𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝒎 𝒙 𝟏𝟐, 𝟑 𝒎 En este caso se debe iniciar con la realización de la operación matemática, por lo cual: 𝟒, 𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝒎 𝒙 𝟏𝟐, 𝟑 𝒎 = 𝟓𝟔, 𝟒𝟒𝟒 𝟕 𝒎𝟐 Seguidamente, se debe redondear el resultado a la cantidad de cifras significativas adecuadas, al analizar la cantidad de cifras significativas de las medidas iniciales, se obtiene que: 4,589 m (posee 4 cifras significativas); 12,3 m (posee 3 cifras significativas) Por lo cual, el resultado se debe redondear a 3 cifras significativas, es decir: 𝟒, 𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝒎 𝒙 𝟏𝟐, 𝟑 𝒎 = 𝟓𝟔, 𝟒 𝒎𝟐
  • 6. Ejemplo 4: Dividir las siguientes medidas: (40,5 km) ÷ (2,3 h) = ? En este caso se debe iniciar con la realización de la operación matemática, por lo cual: (40,5 km) ÷ (2,3 h) = 17,608 695 65 km/h Seguidamente, se debe redondear el resultado a la cantidad de cifras significativas adecuadas, al analizar la cantidad de cifras significativas de las medidas iniciales, se obtiene que: 40,5 m (posee 3 cifras significativas) 2,3 m (posee 2 cifras significativas) Por lo cual, el resultado se debe redondear a 2 cifras significativas, es decir: (40,5 km) ÷ (2,3 h) = 18 km/h De manera similar, se debe proceder con las operaciones de potencia y radicación.
