Editor's Notes

  1. Title Slide: Defending the arts is imperative to many because of the advantages art extends to communities. Taking a look at art from the perspective of enjoyment only is plenty enough reason to implement it. However, there are many other benefits.
  2. The mediums mentioned above are avenues of expressive art. These forms of art are used to share experiences, education, cultural awareness, and sometimes political agendas. The form of art is a choice by the artist, and often has a lot to do with their awareness, life experiences, and social affiliations and perceptions. The artist hope is that the observer will be able to interpret their message. More, importantly enjoy the piece; and know the fundamentals of a critic. In order, to analyze art one would do good to have some knowledge of the artist, purpose of the art form, and the techniques used. According to Lynch 2008, "The arts can help us break out of traditional patterns of thinking and adopt fresh approaches to intellectual experiences.” (para. 1).
  3. Paintings are visual art and left to personal interpretation; when there is no history, story, or information on the artist behind the piece. If one was to look at this painting with an intricate eye. They would see te different shapes, forms, use of space, and cohesiveness. The shadows playing from the sun, the array of line forms used, shadowing and light as in the chiaroscuro technique. It is discernable that this piece was painted in oil; and you can actually imagine the lady blowing the instrument. Analyzing a piece can give one more appreciation for the art. However, critics use this method more often than regular citizens. Still art is more about interpreting the artist message, and the interpretation of the individual. It is also about enjoying the piece, the emotions it triggers, and what the symbols may mean to an individual; regarding time, era, place or event. Although, learning technique and patterns is a good idea; for those that which to identify artist by recognition of pieces. If you look at the pieces above it is not hard to discern that it is the same artist. You can see a running theme in these pieces that are obvious. For instance: They each appear to have a spiritual essence, covering of the head and looking upwards. I would say that her experiences are nostalgic; with a touch of longing and lost. Her color choices though show me hope and lightness. The faces in the sky in 1 & 2 could be deceased ones. In short, I said all this to show how when you really look at a painting much is revealed; about the artist(communicator) and the observer(interpreter). Art should evoke emotion on some level; that is the artist silent way of expressing himself. (Owen. 2015).
  4. According to Rogers 2013, “All human beings, intimately involved from birth with the world of three-dimensional form, learn something of its structural and expressive properties and develop emotional responses to them. This combination of understanding and sensitive response, often called a sense of form, can be cultivated and refined. It is to this sense of form that the art of sculpture primarily appeals.” (p. 1. para. 12). It should be understood that sculptured art has changed over the centuries, but have similar attributes. Such as: materials like clay, wood, concrete, stone, and wax among others. The basics of this medium of art is that it is transitional into many forms and areas of life at present. Not as in the classical or previous eras. (Rogers 2013). For instance, children can build three dimensional objects out of clay, and plastic(Legos). The idea is that an array of materials and can be used to do sculpting projects. Sculpting also use a lot of circular methods to get the full view of the piece.
  5. Classical Music 2013, “One can chart the developments in complex vocal and orchestral music from roughly 1600, when a late–Italian Renaissance attempt to revive ancient Greek music drama led to the creation of grand opera, or starting as early as 1200, when music began to express European nationalism.” (para. 1). However, there are many genres’ of music. Country, Soul, Jazz, Blues, Hip Hop and so on. Each of these categories has the same elements in common. The same basics as above; even though different instruments, beats, performers, and settings or reasons may differ. For example: during slavery songs in the hymnal genre was used as a means of communicating escape routes and times. It is as an enjoyable means a pleasure to listen to, eve when there are no lyrics(Instrumental). There is not always an even tempo, systematic beat, continued harmony, or consistent rhythm; but that is the beauty of music. The feelings and thoughts that it bring out of individuals is the purpose. Often times, sad occasions call for sad music: Like military bag pipes during a veterans burial. Again, enjoyment should be a goal whenever possible. It should be noted that music often expresses culture, lifestyles, and eras. (Genres in music, 2008).
  6. Dance is an expression using body movement to music. There are numerous forms of dance as you can see from above. Each has its own cultural background and method. For instance; ballet is a technical dance, there are rules to follow; but hip hop is not. They often make up moves as they go it is known as free style dancing. However, there is usually some form of choreography involved, as you can see from the dancer above. Again: the purpose is to enjoy the display, or dance for exercise and enjoyment. Dance has often been of rituals and ceremonies as well. According to Jones 1997, “he belief that movement is liberating spurs Jones to liberate terminally ill patients from their despair and hopelessness.” (video).
  7. In performing arts theater produce plays to share messages and experiences. There is a wide range of material that can be covered in plays. The classical plays take us back to centuries before our time, they too address previous or present issues. They can share the story with actors, singing, music, costumes and set designs; in oder to bring a form of reality. Plays may b seen bsome as a fine art.
  8. A functioning building can be a beautiful piece of art as displayed above. “If the mind can perceive it; passion will allow it to happen.” Architecture is a major part of existence, but it does not have to be un-attractive to look at. “What the mind believes; it often can achieve.” Homes, court houses, churches/temples, schools, hospitals and so on are normally not looked at as art. However; if one looks at the intricate design: the angles, materials, functionality, purpose, space, environment, and many other additional elements.
  9. The only way to enjoy cinema is to watch so that you get the experience. This can be done by television, movie theatres, and videos. It should be understood that cinema uses a lot of symbolism; such as the one you see above. He is advertising the items of enjoying a movie. Movies can be influential in positive and negative aspects, but they always tell a story. In forms of: melodrama, comedy, biographies, and mysteries.
  10. According to Lynch 2008, [many scholars believe that]…” the arts offer an expanded tool set for learning and understanding that can enhance creative thinking skills.“ (para. 1). The arts play a major role in societies and individuals personal lives. The different forms of expression entertain people in different ways; and evoke individual feelings. Art has been the reason for many beautiful creations; even necessities. Such as, buildings, bridges and highways. To make this simplistic, whenever human beings create anything, through whatever medium; it is considered art. The possibilities for growth and development with art; is astronomical.
