What is music?
Music is the art of sound in time, expressing ideas
and emotions in significant forms through the
elements of melody, harmony and color. Tones or
sounds occurring either in in a single line (i.e.,
melody) or in multiple lines (i.e., harmony) and the
feeling of movement of sound in time (i.e., rhythm)
are the essential elements of music.
Process of hearing
• At very first sound enters ears & travel along ear
canal.
• It sets off a wave of vibrations from your eardrum to
the snail-shaped cochlea in your inner ear
• These vibrations stimulate sensory hair cells in your
cochlea
• This generates a nerve impulse which travels along
your cochlear nerve to your brain
• The temporal lobe processes the sound

How brain response to music?
• Right hemisphere of brain
• Activated when you hear melodies with a variety of pitch and
timbre
• It also “lights up” when people play music by ear.
• Left hemisphere of brain
• “Lights Up” when you learn to read music, understands key
signature and notation, and follows the sequence of notes.
• Significantly, the brain is activated in the same area that is
involved in analytical and mathematical thinking.
• So you can simultaneously stimulate the right and left
hemispheres of the brain by playing an instrument or by
singing.
Today’s Music technology
•use of electronic devices and computer software.
•tiny I-pods to high voltage rock performances, every
human being is accompanied by music anytime and
anywhere. “Music energizes mood,” “music is a great
stress buster,” “music drives away blues,” “music soothes
souls”.
•There is various genre of music in this world but classical
music is the soul of every music .
What is classical music?
• Its creates a great affects on human brain and also
create a positive effects on human hormonal system
that’s why people feel relax due to the classical music.
• classical music (mainly Indian classical – ragas which is
called the core of Hindustani classical) is characterized
by own particular mood. The acknowledged order of
sentiments or moods is as follows: romantic, erotic,
humorous, pathetic, anger, heroic, fearful, disgust,
amazement and peaceful.
Continued………….
• The each classic, in addition to being associated with
particular mood is also closely connected to a
particular time of a day or a season of a day. Which
can resonate the specific part of the brain, cause of
the particular mood.
What are emotions?
What are emotions?
• Emotions seem to rule our daily lives. We
make decisions based on whether we are
happy, angry, sad, bored, or frustrated. We
choose activities and hobbies based on the
emotions they incite.
What are emotions?
What are emotions?
• Emotion associated with motivation
– Positive – things are going well, keep doing what
you are doing
– Negative – something wrong, change behavior
• Related with goals
– Positive – succeeding toward/accomplishing goals
– Negative – something is interfering/blocking goals
How music effect on emotion?
• The Limbic System is so powerful that
emotions can change how you think.
• Music can aid in the production of serotonin,
which can make you happy!
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in the
transmission of nerve impulses that helps maintaining joyous feelings
Effect of classical music
• Enhances spatial IQ by increasing short and
long term memory
• Increases cognitive skills in children
Music therapy
• Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-
based use of music interventions to
accomplish individualized goals within a
therapeutic relationship by a credentialed
professional who has completed an approved
music therapy program.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• The phenomenon that is able to generate
tension can also assist in reducing it.
• An underlying assumption is that everyone is
endowed with a basic musicality.
• Music as a medium for emotional expression
may help patients to improve their expressive
range and diminish affective flattening. Music
may be used as a safe and socially acceptable
form in which they can express feelings with
ease.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Making music together is always a social
endeavor, inherently connected to forming and
building social relationships and may therefore
help patients to overcome social deficits ease.
• Making music is in itself motivating, hence work
well in those who otherwise have little or no
motivation.
• Lack of pleasure and meaningfulness in life
associated with psychiatric disorders are made to
overcome through esthetic experience inherent
to music therapy.
Our thought
• human emotion work in a different way in each and
every situation,
• Our work is mainly on this human mood or emotion.
We are working on Facial Action Coding System by
which we can measure the emotion levels of
different humans by code the facial changes of
patients(by capturing in camera ) during music
listening process.
