AIM
• The aim is to present the importance and
role of recycling in conserving environment.
SCOPE
• Recycling: An Introduction
• History of Recycling
• The Symbol
• What is recycling
• Materials that can be recycled
• Recycling procedure
• Benefits of Recycling
• Recycling important to environment
• Collection
• Waste Management In Bangladesh
• What can we do
A process
• To change waste materials into new products to prevent waste of
potentially useful materials.
• To Reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials.
• To Reduce energy usage, air pollution, and water pollution.
• In pre-industrial times, evidence of scrap
bronze and other metals collected for reuse.
• In Britain dust and ash was collected by
'dustmen' and used in brick making.
• In 1813, Benjamin Law developed the process
of turning rags into 'shoddy' and 'mungo' wool
in Batley, Yorkshire.
HISTORY OF RECYCLING
• The recycling movement began in
the early 1960s .
Environmentalist believed that
Americans were wasting
minerals, fuels, water, and trees,
some of the worlds most valuable
resources
• In response to the waste
outbreak, environmentalist
began to develop conservation
methods to prevent the
inevitable
110 YEARS OF RECYCLING
110 years after the first recycling plant was established, the
U.S. has one of the highest recycling rates in the world,
today.

THE SYMBOL
The Container Corporation
of America developed a
campaign to promote
conservation awareness as
well as launch a nation
wide design competition for
recycle symbol.
THE SYMBOL
Gary Anderson of
North Las Vegas,
Nevada won first place
in the competition. He
beat out more than
four hundred
submissions with his
simple hand drawn
image.
WHAT IS RECYCLING?
• Reduce
• Reuse
• Recycle
REDUCE MEANS…
• Decreasing unnecessary and wasteful
purchases
• Decreasing the volume of waste
• Decreasing pollutants
REUSE MEANS…
• Taking care of our stuff
• Repurposing
• Donating
• Upcycling
BUY RECYCLED
• Products made from recycled materials
• Make it truly recycling
• Close the loop
MATERIALS THAT CAN BE
RECYCLED
Recycling is a procedure and it is comprised of three parts.
Collected and Cleaned
then sorted according to
the type of material used
and how the material will
be used.
Manufacturing stage,
where collected and
sorted materials are
made into new products
that can be reused.
Resale, and after the
product purchased is
finished, the cycle of
recycling will resume.
7 BENEFITS OF RECYCLING
• Environmental Protection
• Conservation of Resources
• Energy savings
• Community Building
• Jobs creation
• Strong economy
• Financial Benefit
HOW RECYCLING DO
THAT??
Recycling conserves our valuable
natural resources :- Recycling helps to
conserve our natural resources such as
oil, metal and water. For example plastic
bottles can be recycled into new plastic
bottles and polyester fibers for use in
fleece jumpers and car mats.
Recycling saves energy :- Recycling
aluminum saves 95% of the energy
required to produce aluminum from raw
materials. Recycling just one plastic
bottle will save enough energy to power
a 60 watt light bulb for 3 hours!
CONTD….
Recycling protects the environment:
Recycling helps to conserve environment
, so less greenhouse gases are emitted.
With less materials going to landfill, less
harmful emissions like methane gas are
released into the earth's atmosphere.
Recycling can save you money: By
putting more recyclable materials into
your recycling bin you reduce the
amount of times you have to put your
general refuse or black bin out for
collection.
RECYCLING BUILDS COMMUNITY
• People work together
• Communicate
• Share ideas
• Support each other
RECYCLING CREATES JOBS
10,000 tons of waste:
• Incinerated, creates 1 job
• Landfilled, creates 6 jobs
• Recycled, creates 36 jobs!
RECYCLING PROTECT THE
ENVIRONMENT
• Reduced contamination risk from landfills
• Reduced pollution
• Reduced environmental impact from mining or
extracting fresh raw materials.
Why is recycling important to the environment?
Take this simple example: by reusing paper, we can make fresh paper to
use in schools and the office. By recycling the paper, not only do we
conserve energy that it takes to harvest the raw material from trees, we
preserve the raw material itself, trees. Trees are good for the
atmosphere, naturally clearing the air of harmful greenhouse emissions,
so keeping them in tact benefits the environment even more.
Recycling is important because it
helps us to save money,
benefiting human beings directly
in their day to day lives. We can
sell recyclable materials to
organizations that purchases
surplus materials for reuse.
Why is Recycling Important to Us
Directly?
COLLECTION
A number of different systems have been implemented to
collect recycles from the general waste stream. The three
main categories of collection are:-
 Drop-off centers
 Buy-back centers
 Curbside collection
PROCESS OF WASTE RECYCLING
PROCESS OF GLASS RECYCLING
WASTE MANAGEMENT IN
BANGLADESH
• Bangladesh has minimal waste
collection coverage which forces
majority of the waste to be
dumped in open lands. where
general waste are often mixed
with hazardous waste such as
hospital waste. In a report the
data showed that, in Dhaka, only
about 42% of generated waste is
collected
FEW EXAMPLES OF GOOD
PRACTICES
• Source Separation of Waste at Uttara
Model Town (Sector 5)
• Composting of Waste in Slums
• School Composting Program of
American International School Dhaka
(AISD)
• Plastic Waste Recycling in Dhaka by
Informal Sector
• Battery Buy Back for Recycling by
RahimAfrooz
• Agricultural Waste Used for Biogas
Generation and Improved Cook Stoves
WHAT CAN WE DO??
 We can spread awareness
among people about the good
effects of recycling.
 We can gather people from our
neighborhood on week offs and
collectively make efforts to
collect useful garbage.
 We must use bins every time we
dump waste material.
 We must use internet to know
more and about recycling
RECYCLING IS A WAY OF LIFE
• Once you make the choice to recycle…
• And stick to that choice everyday…
• Recycling becomes second nature – a way of life.
So, why is recycling important? Recycling is important
because it benefits us directly as human beings, benifits for
environment and also will deliver long term benefits for our
children to enjoy.
SO…..LET’S ALL RECYCLE
TODAY…
ANY QUERY?????

Editor's Notes

  1. 110 years after the first recycling plant was established, the United States today has one of the highest recycling rates in the world.
  2. US Recycling Rate (1960-2008) chart, figures according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  3. What is Recycling? Whenever we try and define recycling, we need to think of the three r's of modern waste management: reduce, reuse, recycle.
  4. “Reduce" means: Decreasing unnecessary and wasteful purchases, decreasing the volume of waste, and decreasing pollutants.
  5. "Reuse" means taking care of our things so that they can last longer, repurposing used items, donating or giving away unwanted stuff, and upcycling waste materials.
  6. Buy Recycled: products made from recycled materials to complete the cycle or close the recycling loop.
  7. The 7 Benefits of Recycling are: Financial Benefit, Conservation of Resources, Energy savings, Community Building, Jobs creation, Strong economy, and Environmental Protection.
  8. Recycling Builds Community: People work together, Communicate, Share ideas, and Support each other when they're involved in a worthy common endeavor like recycling.
  9. Recycling Creates Jobs: 10,000 tons of waste when incinerated, creates 1 job; when landfilled, creates 6 jobs; when recycled, creates 36 jobs!
