2. INTRODUCTION
A vital component of your body's healing
process is inflammation. Inflammatory cells
that have travelled to the site of an injury or a
foreign substance like germs cause it to
happen. Chronic inflammation may result
from inflammatory cells remaining too long.
3. Inflammatory cells are released when your
immune system is activated by your body.
These cells fight bacteria or repair tissue
injury.You may have chronic inflammation if
your body releases inflammatory cells even
when you are healthy or uninjured. Numerous
chronic disorders, including arthritis and
Alzheimer's disease, exhibit inflammation as
a symptom.
4. TYPES OF INFLAMMATION
1. Acute Inflammation : the reaction to an immediate
physical injury, like cutting your finger. Your body sends
inflammatory cells to the wound to speed up healing.
The healing process is launched by these cells.
2. Chronic Inflammation : Even when there is no threat
from the outside, your body keeps releasing
inflammatory cells. For instance, in rheumatoid arthritis,
inflammatory cells and chemicals attack the joint tissues,
causing an intermittent inflammation that can seriously
harm joints and result in pain and deformity.
5. SYMPTOMS
Acute inflammation causes -
Flushed skin at the site of the injury.
Pain or tenderness.
Swelling.
Heat.
Chronic inflammation causes –
Abdominal pain
Chest pain
Fatigue
Fever Joint pain or stiffness
Mouth sores
Skin rash
6. Conditions are associated with chronic inflammation
Chronic inflammation is involved in the disease process of
many conditions, including:
Alzheimer’s disease
Asthma
Cancer
Heart disease
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and ankylosing spondylitis
(AS)
Type 2 diabetes
7. Pharmacological treatment
Treatment is not usually necessary for inflammation. Rest,
ice, and proper wound care can frequently reduce the pain
associated with acute inflammation in a few of days.
If you have chronic inflammation, healthcare provider
may recommend :
Supplements : Zinc supplements and some vitamins
(vitamins A, C, and D) may help to promote healing and
reduce inflammation. For instance, your doctor might
advise taking vitamin(s) or a fish oil supplement.
Alternately, you might add spices like turmeric, ginger, or
garlic that have anti-inflammatory qualities.
8. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
(NSAIDs) : These OTC medications reduce
inflammation.Ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen may
be recommended by a healthcare professional.
Steroid Injection : Shots of corticosteroids
reduce inflammation in a particular joint or
muscle. For instance, a steroid shot in your spine
may be administered if you have rheumatoid
arthritis that affects your back. The number of
steroid injections a patient receives in the same
body part shouldn't exceed three to four per year.
9. NON – PHARMACOLOGICALTREATMENT
Patient may choose to follow an anti-
inflammatory diet.
choose to eat more foods that have anti-
inflammatory properties, such as:
Oily fish, such as mackerel, salmon or
sardines
Leafy greens like spinach and kale
Olive oil
Tomatoes
10. Consuming excessive amounts of some meals
may make inflammation worse. Avoiding the
following may help you feel better if you have
chronic inflammation:
Fried foods, including many fast food items.
Cured meats with nitrates, such as hot dogs.
Highly refined oils and trans fats.
Refined carbohydrates, such as sugar, pastries or
white bread.
