Friends indeed are a necessity. For nobody would choose to live
without good friends even if he had all the other good things in life.
People who are poor and unhappy need friends because, in times of
difficulty, friends seem to be their only refuge. Those who are rich and
happy need friends too, because with whom would they share their
good fortune? Good friends help keep the young from making
mistakes, old people need friends to help them face the sunset of their
lives with serenity, and those in the prime of life are enabled to do
greater things because of the support and encouragement of good
friends.

SUMMARY - a brief statement or
restatement of main points especially as a
conclusion to a work. In a summary, the writer
significantly shortens a text, retelling it in his
own words, touching on the main points of
the passage.

8. The following process is a great strategy to do this:
1. Write a few sentences – in your own words – stating the main message
or gist of the story.
2. Write a few sentences about the setting of the story in the context of
the story.
3. Write a few sentences about the main characters in the context of the
story.
4. Write a few sentences about the conflict of the story in the context of
the story.
5. Write several sentences to summarize the sequence of events using
transitions effectively:
First, ... Then, ... Next, .... Finally, ...
6. Write a few sentences about how the conflict was resolved.
7. Write a few sentences restating the the message or gist of the story
that began the summary, but this time doing it in a slightly different way

9. 2. PRECIS - is a brief summary of a book,
article, speech, or text. When the writer
writes a précis, he uses one or two concise
sentences to give the essence of a passage
or text.

10. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
SUMMARY AND PRÉCIS?
Summary means the whole, literally the
description of the entirety or sum, you must
use your own words as much as possible, and
as few words from the original as possible
Précis means the germ, the essence, you use
the language and structure of the original

11. 3. PARAPHRASE - A RESTATEMENT OF A TEXT OR PASSAGE
GIVING THE MEANING IN ANOTHER FORM, AS FOR CLEARNESS;
REWORDING
Examples:
Original: The children enjoyed the show and they wanted to watch
more.
Paraphrase: The children wanted to watch more shows.
Original: The members of the family help each other in cleaning the
house
and cooking the food.
Paraphrase: The members of the family love and help each other.
Original: Jessica loves writing stories and making poems.
Paraphrase: Jessica loves literature.

Setting- the place and time the story happened
Conflict- What is the problem of the story?
Resolution- What did the character do to solve the problem?
Ending – what happened to the characters or how did the story
end?
