The documentary was about how Parliament has failed as a democratic institution. A mosaic effect was used to portray Parliament as fragile. Both the documentary and poster featured images of people moving in front of a stagnant Parliament building. The double page spread included the poster and an interviewee photo from the documentary. This synergy across the tasks promoted the anti-establishment message and appealed to younger audiences. A more personalized title could have further strengthened the brand across all pieces.
How effective documentary, double page spread, and poster combination
1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?
2. What my brief specified
• My brief specified that I should be looking to
make a realistic and convincing documentary
with the addition of a double page spread to
be included in a listings magazine and poster
to also be included in a listings magazine in
the style of such media giants such as BBC 1
and Channel 4.
3. • I feel as though my documentary, my double page
spread and my poster had a good sense of
synergy through my use of a similar font and also
the red colour of my font. This helped to create
my documentary as a brand and as something
that could be marketed properly.
• My documentary itself was about the way that
parliament has failed us a place of democracy
and the mosaic effect I used helped to show a
place that was fragile and falling apart in terms of
the freedom that it claims to represent.
4. Synergy between the tasks
• For my double page spread I also included the poster itself
on the double page spread to link the two ancillary tasks
showing synergy once again. The movement of people in
front of the houses of parliament helped to establish the
building as something that had stayed stagnant and still
while everyone else kept moving. My documentary itself
was about the way that parliament has failed us a place of
democracy and the mosaic effect I used helped to show a
place that was fragile and falling apart in terms of the
freedom that it claims to represent.
• This was in both the documentary and the poster and gave
my documentary a distinct anti-establishment brand that I
used to appeal to the usually politically apathetic younger
generation.
5. • I also included an image of the main interviewee
taken straight from the documentary to try to
give the readers of the listings magazine a taste
of what is to come from the documentary itself. It
was also obviously an article about the
documentary and as such was giving more
exposure to the documentary and showing an
effective use of the combination once again. Also
at the beginning of my documentary I had a
montage of shots of the houses of parliament
which fit in quite well with the poster which is a
shot of the houses of parliament.
6. Criticisms
• I feel that I could have possibly produced a
more personalized title that I could have used
across all three promotional platforms to
make 16 and opinionated a more synergized
brand.
