Introduction:
Discussion:
Foodplaysacentral role inthe survival of species.Food
givesorganismsenergythat enablesthemto carry out
the many activities they do each day; this includes
predatorschasinga preyor a preyescapinga predator,
arboreal organisms climbing trees to gather fruits, or
fishswimminginschoolsin search for food,to name a
few. Organisms are able to obtain energy from the
foods they eat through digestion.
Digestion of food is carried out by the organs and
substances of the digestive system. During digestion,
food is broken down to smaller parts -- a fraction of
which is made up of nutrients. These nutrients are
circulatedtothe differentpartsof thebodythroughthe
bloodstream and assimilated by cells.
Showingthe illustrationof howthe processof
digestionoccurs.

Learning Task 2
A SweetBreak!
Procedure:
1. Fill the twobeakerswithwarmwater.Make sure
that the amountof waterplacedineach glassisabout
the same.Label the glassesA and B.
2. Prepare twopiecesof candies.Wrapa piece of
candy ina paper towel andcrushit usinga mortar and
pestle orany hardobjectlike apiece of wood.
3. Place one piece of candy intothe glassof warm
waterlabeledA andplace the crushedpiecesof candy
inthe remainingglassof warmwaterlabeledB.
4. Observe howlongittakesfor the whole candyin
GlassA and the crushedpiecesof candyin GlassB to
dissolve.
2. 5. Record yourobservation.
Questions:
1. How doescrushingthe candy to smallerpieces
affectitsdissolution?
2. What doescrushingthe candy representinthe
processof digestion?
Learning Task 3
How do enzymesaffectdigestion?
Procedure:
1. Numberand label the testtubes(1-water,2-fresh
pineapple juice,and3-bromeliadleaf juice).
2. Prepare a bar or one tablespoonful of granulated
gelatininthe measuringcupusing100 mL of boiling
water.
3. Stir well withaspoonuntil the gelatinisdissolved.
4. Place 3 mL of waterintotesttube 1, 3 mL of fresh
pineapple juice intotesttube 2,and3 mL of Bromeliad
leaf juice intotesttube 3.
5. Add 10 mL of gelatinmixturetoeachtesttube.
Shake well tomix thoroughly.
6. Refrigerate the samplesovernight.
7. On Day 2, checkthe contentsof each testtube for
solidificationof the contents.
Recordyour observations.
