7. Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication for TV Broadcast
TV Broadcasting is basically communicating
ideas to a wide audience. Communication has two
categories: verbal and non-verbal communication. TV
anchors and presenters need to consider these two and
to use these for effective broadcast delivery.
8. Verbal Communication
Verbal communication is the use of words to
convey a message. It covers both our words
and verbal fillers. The common verbal element
in television broadcasting performance is the
voice which covers pitch, tone and speed of
speaking. Consider the following in reporting.

them meaning
A reporter’s voice affects the meaning of a
report. How a reporter says something creates
a certain tone and clearly points out key facts.
Lowering your voice, or downward inflection -
conveys certainty and a more serious tone

Broadcasters should speak like they are talking to
a good friend. This conversational tone creates a
better relationship with the audience because the
reporter sounds like he or she is engaging in a
personal conversation with the viewer.
