2. VANE PUMP
• A ROTARY VANE PUMP IS A POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT PUMP THAT CONSISTS OF
VANES MOUNTED TO A ROTOR THAT ROTATES INSIDE OF A CAVITY
• V ANES ARE ALLOWED TO SLIDE INTO AND OUT OF THE ROTOR AND SEAL ON ALL
EDGES, CREATING VANE CHAMBERS THAT DO THE PUMPING WORK. ON THE
INTAKE SIDE OF THE PUMP, THE VANE CHAMBERS ARE INCREASING IN VOLUME.
• THESE INCREASING-VOLUME VANE CHAMBERS ARE FILLED WITH FLUID FORCED IN
BY THE INLET PRESSURE. INLET PRESSURE IS ACTUALLY THE PRESSURE FROM THE
SYSTEM BEING PUMPED, OFTEN JUST THE ATMOSPHERE. ON THE DISCHARGE SIDE
OF THE PUMP, THE VANE CHAMBERS ARE DECREASING IN VOLUME, FORCING FLUID
OUT OF THE PUMP. THE ACTION OF THE VANE DRIVES OUT THE SAME VOLUME OF
FLUID WITH EACH ROTATION.
5. • POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT PRINCIPLE
• A POSITIVE-DISPLACEMENT PUMP IS ONE THAT DISPLACES (DELIVERS) THE SAME AMOUNT OF LIQUID FOR EACH
ROTATING CYCLE OF THE PUMPING ELEMENT. CONSTANT DELIVERY DURING EACH CYCLE IS POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF
THE CLOSE-TOLERANCE FIT BETWEEN THE PUMPING ELEMENT AND THE PUMP CASE.
• WHEN A HYDRAULIC PUMP OPERATES, IT PERFORMS TWO FUNCTIONS. FIRST, ITS MECHANICAL ACTION CREATES A
VACUUM AT THE PUMP INLET WHICH ALLOWS ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE TO FORCE LIQUID FROM THE RESERVOIR
INTO THE INLET LINE TO THE PUMP. SECOND, ITS MECHANICAL ACTION DELIVERS THIS LIQUID TO THE PUMP
OUTLET AND FORCES IT INTO THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM.
• THE ROTOR IS SEALED INTO THE CAM BY TWO SIDEPLATES. VANES OR BLADES FIT WITHIN THE SLOTS OF THE
IMPELLER. AS THE ROTOR ROTATES (YELLOW ARROW) AND FLUID ENTERS THE PUMP, CENTRIFUGAL FORCE,
HYDRAULIC PRESSURE, AND/OR PUSHRODS PUSH THE VANES TO THE WALLS OF THE HOUSING. THE TIGHT SEAL
AMONG THE VANES, ROTOR, CAM, AND SIDEPLATE IS THE KEY TO THE GOOD SUCTION
• THE HOUSING AND CAM FORCE FLUID INTO THE PUMPING CHAMBER THROUGH HOLES IN THE CAM
• 3. AS THE ROTOR CONTINUES AROUND, THE VANES SWEEP THE FLUID TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE CRESCENT
WHERE IT IS SQUEEZED THROUGH DISCHARGE HOLES OF THE CAM AS THE VANE APPROACHES THE POINT OF THE
CRESCENT . FLUID THEN EXITS THE DISCHARGE PORT.
