10. Major Problems in Dental water lines
• Microbial presence inside water tubes due to stagnant water (even
with purified water)
• Water in direct contact with the patients open wounds increases the
chances of infection
• Microbial counts can reach as high as 200,000 CFU/mL within five
days(1) after installation of new dental unit waterlines and levels of
microbial contamination as high as 1 million or 106 CFU/mL have been
documented(2).
• The maximum allowed heterotrophic count as per WHO is 500 CFU/mL

11. Case study
According to a recent article in 2012(3), a case report was
published concerning an old healthy woman who
developed Legionnaire's disease after a dental visit.
Despite medical efforts, the patient died within 2 days.
Her dentists were stunned because the pneumonia
causing bacteria (Legionella pneumophila) was acquired
while receiving dental care.

12. • Biofilm is like a slime layer of pathogenic microbes that
forms inside the dental unit water tubing. Formation begins
in a new dental unit within hours of the first use.
• Dental unit water becomes stagnant inside the lines at
several times: between patients, overnight, on weekends,
during lunch breaks.
• Stagnation of the water allows the bacteria to grow and
flourish on the walls of the waterlines.
