Mobile strategy
by Joost Vogelezang
Why does a mobile strategy matter for
your company?
Gartner Research Vice President Phil
Redman states: "The era of the PC has
ended. Employees are becoming more
mobile and looking for ways to still be
connected wherever work needs to be
done. The convenience and productivity
gains that mobile devices bring are too
tempting for most companies and their
employees.โ
According to Gartner, by 2017, 90% of
the enterprise apps will be both desktop
and mobile, up from 20% in 2013.
(Gartner Predicts, 2012).
During my conversations with you, our
customer, I received a lot of questions
regarding the usage of mobile devices in
combination with your management
information. Questions about the rollout,
security, intuitiveness, etc. For many
years CXO-Cockpit combines Mobile and
Web-based reporting in one solution.
In this newsletter you will find a great
story from one of our customers, more
information about the functionality of
our mobile solutions, best practices
security and an article about โMobile
rollout considerationsโ.

Mobile rollout considerations
by Wouter Born
As soon as companies want to access
confidential information on mobile
devices all sorts of questions come up.
Questions like:
ยฉ What additional security can we use
to secure our mobile data?
ยฉ Can we encrypt this data?
ยฉ Does the app cache any of the
reports?
In order to answer these questions (since
CXO-Cockpit is installed in most cases in
your own environment) it often comes
down to your own IT policies on how to
deal with the connectivity to the CXOCockpit.
Among our customers we see the
following solutions for connectivity:
1. Apply SSL encryption and make the
website publicly available
This option is most used by non-public
organizations and is probably the most
user friendly option.
The way it works is that all website traffic
is encrypted using SSL, while the website
is available publicly on the internet. SSL
(Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard
security technology for establishing an
encrypted link between a web server and
a browser. This link ensures that all data
passed between the web server and
browsers remain private and integral.
SSL is an industry standard and is used by
millions of websites.
In case of the CXO-Cockpit the remote
user just needs to log in to the CXOCockpit app with his user name and
password to get access to the
dashboards. It is recommended to
enforce a complex password policy to
avoid passwords like โWelcomeโ.
2. VPN connection
Using a VPN connection, sometimes in
combination with SSL, is widely used by
public organizations.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) extends
a private network across a public
network, such as the Internet. It enables
a computer to send and receive data
across shared or public networks as if it
were directly connected to the private
network, while benefiting from the
functionality, security and management
policies of the private network.
The user needs to have the correct VPN
software and account details on his
mobile device in order to login to the
corporate network. Once connected to
the network via VPN the user can start
the mobile app and login to CXOCockpit.
With this security level it is for example
still possible to use an iPad during the
board meeting. This option is very
secure, but also limited.
Additional features
The CXO-Cockpit provides a number of
additional features to make the mobile
usage more secure:
ยฉ Mobile usage can be switched off at
server level
ยฉ Mobile usage can be switched off/on
per user
ยฉ The โRemind my passwordโ function
can be disabled at server level
ยฉ None of the reports viewed with the
CXO-Cockpit app are cached on the
mobile device
3. No remote connectivity
FOR MORE INFORMATION
Some companies decide to use the CXOCockpit mobile app only within the
company building. The user can then
only access CXO-Cockpit reports on their
mobile device when connected to
company WIFI.

Intiuitive Design
We are making good progress on the
development of our new CXO-Cockpit
version 5.0. In the design of this new
version we have given much attention to
the intuitiveness of the user interface; as
long as users can complete the tasks they
want without interruption and thought,
itโs all good. Good intuitive design is
invisible and non-intuitive design is a
disruptor. Since intuitive design is
invisible, users will not actually
appreciate it (since they wonโt even
notice it) โ but they will immediately take
notice if it is not there. That is why we
find this subject very important.

Investment Center (NIC) conference in
Chicago on Thursday.
Having an information system in place
can help centralize various pieces of data
being
recorded
throughout
the
community into one singular platform,
said John Moore, CEO of Atria Senior
Living.
Atria Senior Living is one of our
customers using the CXO-Cockpit mobile
apps. In this article the CEO (John Moore)
explains how data use is an operating
game changer within Atria by using CXOCockpit!
Company details
Atria Senior Living offers much more
than a place for older people to live. They
build vibrant senior living communities
that offer companionship, comfort and a
wide selection of community events that
match individual interests.
ยฉ Atria owns or operates more than
125 communities in 27 states
ยฉ Atria employs approximately 9,000
professionals nationwide
ยฉ Atria communities are home to more
than 14,000 seniors
Senior Living CEOs Say Data Use is
Operating Game Changer
In
an
increasingly
competitive
marketplace, senior living providers are
seeing data, collected throughout their
communities, is driving their ability to
manage through the competition.
CEOs say data collection and analysis is a
major game-changer when it comes to
operating efficiencies, but it also means
finding solutions to managing it.
Information systems are critical in
providing a data-driven understanding of
a communityโs operations, agreed a
panel of senior living CEOs and
executives during the 23rd National
provider uses an HR database to track
and manage employee information.
Viโs Human Resources Information
Systems (HRIS) is only one of the
technologies that have helped run the
providerโs business more efficiently, says
company President Randy Richardson.
An operator of 140-plus generally
assisted living licensed communities in
28 states, Atria has committed roughly
$15 million to information systems over
the last five years.
โAs a data-driven organization, we
needed to automate and streamline the
way we obtain information,โ Moore said.
The solution became a software called
CXO-Cockpit, a tablet-driven application
that sits on top of Atriaโs current
database management system, allowing
the provider to do away with its old ways
of dropping information into a number of
Excel files.
CXO-Cockpit enables Atria staff at both
the executive level and those working
within the communities, to view data
such as rent rolls and expense reports
across different operational segments.
Expense reports related to food costs,
maintenance, as well as sales activity
that records tour inquiries can be
accessed within the one software tool.
This allows the communityโs executive
directors to have access to an array of
information, said Moore.
The HRIS has effectively made the
company greener by eliminating paper
use in employee record reporting,
Richardson said.
The system employs various dashboards
that a providerโs HR department can use
to look at key metrics such as staff
turnover, even
โIโm a big believer that if you measure
something and put that out in front of
people, they start to look at that,โ
Richardson said.
As healthcare reforms increase the need
for organizations to track and improve
the quality of care they provide,
information systems look to play a
critical role in a providerโs survival within
the shifting healthcare environment.
โThere are a bunch of smarter web
developers and user tools out there, and
itโs getting better and better every day,โ
said Moore. โSenior living isnโt rocketscience. There are a lot of moving parts,
but knowing those parts is the name of
the game.โ
John Moore, CEO of
Atria Senior Living
โIt was getting to a point where we had
so much information we couldnโt use it
under our old system,โ Moore said. โThis
centralized solution let us put it into a
single package.โ

Release 4.3.4
by Irina Goleva
CXO-Cockpit 4.3.4 release notes
As of release 4.3.4 we are introducing the
concept of Linked Objects and the new
user role of Report Builder. These two
new functionalities are closely related to
each other and allow you to create and
maintain reports in a more flexible and
efficient way.
1. Linked Objects
Letโs start with Linked Objects Concept:
Have you ever considered cleaning up
your report lists, because there appears
to be too many?
As often happens, some of the lists are
only used in a particular report and never
come in handy again. A vivid example can
be a report within Multiple Bars & Lines
template. For such a report, you might
need to create 6 lists for the bars and 6
lists for the lines. At the same time, you
might need to create a particular format
for the bars and for the lines. Very often
these lists and formats will be used only
within this report and overcrowd the
Maintain Lists menu.
Linked Objects Concept allows to create
private objects, which are linked to a
particular report. By linked objects we
mean lists, drill lists and formats.
Create a User Group with the Report Builder role
These objects will not be found in public
maintenance menus, such as Maintain
Lists, unless necessary.
Once the report is deleted, these objects
will be gone as well. If required, linked
objects can be made public. In this case
the Administrator publishes the linked
objects.
This concept helps you to keep your main
Maintain Lists menu in order and
facilitates the report maintenance
process.
In the Report Parameters Panel an additional button
โLinked listsโ is available for Report Builder
2. Report Builder
The other new functionality, available as
of release 4.3.4 is closely related to the
Linked Objects. It is the new user role of
Report Builder. We have added this role
to the already existing Administrator and
Viewer user roles.
The special feature behind the Report
Builder role is that they can only build
reports by either reusing public objects or
creating their own linked objects. The
Administrators will further decide if they
want to make Report Builderโs reports
and linked objects available to the wider
user audience.
While the Report Builder can fully
concentrate on creating reports,
Administrator can be busy with other
important CXO-Cockpit activities such as
report maintenance, security and
integration management.

the new 4.3.4 functionalities can be
