The number of CXO-Cockpit customers is
growing rapidly. We at CXO-Cockpit
believe it is very important that you, as a

Customer Officer.
Let me give a short introduction about
myself:
I have over 20 years of
experience in IT, Finance and Consulting.
I started my career in financial
administration which still helps me to
understand my customers well.
I continued my career at two software
development companies, where I learned
everything about developing software
systems.

During the past 12 years I have worked at
Partake Consulting and Ernst & Young
implementing and managing EPM
projects.

Free Format template
by Irina Goleva

Hello CXO-Captains!
Don’t you get bored during the
Management Board meetings when
looking at the endless same-faced multi
column reports?

We liked the report presentation so much
that we decided to recreate it in the CXOCockpit
website
(http://www.cxocockpit.com) demo.

The CXO-Cockpit team thinks it’s time to
broaden the reporting horizons and
leverage CXO-Cockpit’s functionality to
the maximum.

How does it work?

Adjusting the Report Dimensions and
Report Parameters will help you to
complete the fine-tuning of your report.

We suggest you consider these key
points when building a Free Format
template report:

Find out more:

Starting from today, we will be coming
up with ideas on how to improve the
effectiveness of your reports, not only
from the data point of view, but also from
a visual perspective.

In this article you can find an inspirational
example of a report, created with the
Free Format template.

© Decide what you actually want to
show in your report: you might get
carried away with the variety of the
various table and chart controls, but
let’s remember that reporting is all
about content. The report needs to
make sense and be logical.
© Think of the best combination of
report controls: a table can be
effectively complimented by a bar
and line chart, representing the
figures in a more visual way. When
combined together, they create a
complete multi-dimensional picture
of the analyzed data.
© Effectively use available report
space: try not to make your report
overcrowded or empty. Keep in mind
that an overpopulated report is hard
to read and an
under-populated
one
looks
unfinished. Try to
find
a
happy
medium and it will
make your report
look complete and
accurate.

One of our customers created a similar
report to the one showed on this page,
which gives an extended overview of the
Balance Sheet. It complements the usual
multi-column way of viewing the Balance
Sheet with three financial ratio charts
and a Net Cash bridge, comparing
budget values to actuals.

After these points are
considered, all you need
to do is to create (or
reuse) the item lists for
every control and apply
them to the report
controls, like you

To start with, let’s take a closer look at
the Free Format template. This template
gives you far more flexibility when
creating reports, allowing you to create a
unique report template with the look and
feel of your choice.
Although the existing 17 templates can
cover the majority of requirements of the
CXO-Cockpit Community, we wanted to
give you even more flexibility to create
custom templates without the need for
programming. That’s why we have
implemented a Free Format template.
The Free Format (also known as Generic)
template serves this purpose perfectly
and allows you to create a combination of
different type of charts with multicolumn statements in one report.

would normally do with standard CXOCockpit templates.

As always, you can refer to our Wiki
articles for more detailed information:

Please, refer to the Gauge Control article for
detailed information.

Enable dimension name override per
report
We have extended the Report Dimensions
with a new "Alias" attribute. By using this new
attribute, you can change the name of the
dimension name on the POV or in the
Dimension Breakdown list. More details are
available in Report Dimensions article.

Item Selector as a separate control in a
Free Format template
Item Selector is now available as a separate
control in a Free Format Template. By linking
it to other controls of the report (i.e. a bars &
lines chart and a table), you can make your
report even more flexible. Please, refer to
Item Selector article for more details.

Ability to copy items within a list
No report can be built without the main report
building block - item list. To operate with
them quicker and more efficiently, we are
introducing the possibility to copy items
within the lists. It sets you free from the
necessity to add every item one by one.

Adding Attachments to POV

Dimension Variables usage in Security
Filters

You are no longer limited to only typing in text
comments, but you are also able to insert
attachment(s) to the POV comments, which
can be the illustration to your main POV
comments (i.e. additional charts and
substantial pieces of text). Find out more in
the Adding Attachments to POV Comments
article.

You can now use Dimension Variables in
Security Filters. Using a Dimension Variable
instead of a particular dimension member,
saves time you would normally spend on
Security Filter maintenance. Please, refer to
Point of View Security Filters article for more
details.

Gauge Control in a Free Format
template
We have introduced Gauge control as a part
of Free Format template. This control allows
to analyze the company's KPI values as
opposed to the defined target values. For
instance, you may want to compare your
actuals to the budget values, or previous

Ability to filter dimensions from
breakdowns
We have extended the Report Dimensions
with
a
new
attribute
"ExcludeFromBreakdown". This attribute
allows you to exclude a particular dimension
from the report dimension breakdown. You
can find more details in Report Dimensions
article.

Display account-breakdown in
Member Detail control
There is the possibility to display account
breakdown in Member Detail Control of the
Financial Statement report. If the Account
dimension is one of the report breakdown
dimensions, the sub-accounts of the selected
account will be displayed according to their
hierarchy. You can find more details in
Financial Statement FAQ.

Waterfall template: user selected
breakdown dimension
In the previous releases only the
administrator of the Cockpit could specify the
breakdown dimension in the Waterfall
Template. As of this version, the breakdown
dimension can be selected by the end-user.
You can find more details in the Waterfall
template article.

Dynamic description of formula items
(incl. usage in merged headers)
Before this version, the headers (or row
labels) of formula items (i.e., a Variance) could
only be entered manually. Now you can use
the descriptions of selected members from
the dimensions of the list. Hence, the header
of a Variance column could be “Jan / 2013”
where this dynamically changes with
alternative selections from the Point of View.

HFM Integration Adapter
The HFM integration adapter is now
compatible with the latest HFM version
(11.1.2.2)

Item Selector as a separate control in a Free Format template Item Selector is now available as a separate control in a Free Format Template. By linking it to other controls of the report (i.e. a bars & lines chart and a table), you can make your report even more flexible. Please, refer to Item Selector article for more details. Ability to copy items within a list No report can be built without the main report building block - item list. To operate with them quicker and more efficiently, we are introducing the possibility to copy items within the lists. It sets you free from the necessity to add every item one by one. Adding Attachments to POV comments Dimension Variables usage in Security Filters You are no longer limited to only typing in text comments, but you are also able to insert attachment(s) to the POV comments, which can be the illustration to your main POV comments (i.e. additional charts and substantial pieces of text). Find out more in the Adding Attachments to POV Comments article. You can now use Dimension Variables in Security Filters. Using a Dimension Variable instead of a particular dimension member, saves time you would normally spend on Security Filter maintenance. Please, refer to Point of View Security Filters article for more details. Gauge Control in a Free Format template We have introduced Gauge control as a part of Free Format template. Display account-breakdown in Member Detail control There is the possibility to display account breakdown in Member Detail Control of the Financial Statement report. If the Account dimension is one of the report breakdown dimensions, the sub-accounts of the selected account will be displayed according to their hierarchy. You can find more details in Financial Statement FAQ. Waterfall template: user selected breakdown dimension In the previous releases only the administrator of the Cockpit could specify the breakdown dimension in the Waterfall Template. As of this version, the breakdown dimension can be selected by the end-user. You can find more details in the Waterfall template article. Dynamic description of formula items (incl. usage in merged headers) Before this version, the headers (or row labels) of formula items (i.e., a Variance) could only be entered manually. Now you can use the descriptions of selected members from the dimensions of the list. Hence, the header of a Variance column could be “Jan / 2013” where this dynamically changes with alternative selections from the Point of View.
