Active with the Chicagoland Marine Aquarium Society, Richard Rinaolo has experience in maintaining a reef aquarium. With a colorful, craggy appearance of a healthy tropical sea floor, coral reef systems are a sought-after element of contemporary home aquariums. When keeping coral healthy, a major technological challenge is mimicking the equatorial sun within an indoor environment. This is enabled through advanced LED light systems, which have been developed over the past two decades. While indoor coral were initially collected in the wild and imported to the United States, today many varieties are farm-raised by coral aquaculture operations. This makes it a sustainable endeavor. Transplanted into indoor reef tanks, often on rocks, the coral are integrated within complex ecosystems that include artificial lights, wave-making pumps, and beneficial organisms such as janitor shrimp. With each coral type unique, a key focus is on maintaining the proper pH and ensuring that invasive microorganisms do not flourish. Live coral must be handled with care, as some can release hazardous palytoxins when brushed, exposed to hot water, or even handled without gloves.
