Bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) are tools designed to minimize unintended capture of marine animals and reduce the adverse environmental impacts of fishing. Over 7 million metric tons of bycatch are discarded each year, including non-target fish, turtles, corals, and other species. BRDs work by separating catch by size using grids or panels to guide bycatch out of escape openings, or by exploiting behavioral differences between target and bycatch species to allow the latter to orient and swim to freedom. Properly implementing BRDs can help ensure ecosystem diversity and integrity while protecting juvenile fish stocks.

 Exceed the preservation capacity of the boat.

4. TRASH FISH
 Fish that have a low commercial value and ecological
value is preferred to Trash Fish.
 Undersized fish and other animals that were
traditionally discarded over board.
 This are sold as fish meal or food for culture species.

5. WHY WE SHOULD REDUCE BY
CATCH
 Over 7 million mt of fish by catch are discarded every
year[FAO,2003].
 Part of code of conduct for responsible fisheries.

6. INITIAL STEPS
 Trawls with a low headline hight to minimize fish
catches.
 Ground chain arrangements that reduce the amount of
seabed animals, rocks and debris taken.
 Avoid of fishing grounds where by catch is known to
be high,including grounds where coral,sponges and
rocks are present.
 Using mesh size big enough to allow some small
animals to escape.

7. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS
 Ensure the diversity and integrity of the environment.
 Protect fish stocks by keeping juvenile and adult fishes
out of the catch.
 The unwantend and dangerous species will be
reduced.

8. BRDs CATEGORIES

These devices use inclined grids or panels of netting
to physically block the passage of by catch into the
codend and guide it towards and escape opening.
Ex-JTED, Square mesh codend .etc.

9.  Exploit behavioural differences between target catch
and bycatch:
Most fish can swim in a moving net. Orientate to the
direction of tow,and swim out through an escape
opening.
Examples: Fisheye, fish box, RES,TED Jones-Davis.etc.
