Expertise can be defined as a combination of experience and "expertness." It is the place where
knowledge meets know-how. Those characteristics define Richard Backhouse, GE's Growth
Values Expertise champion.
Backhouse, a Business Metrics & Data Warehouse Manager for GE Money Home Lending in the
United Kingdom, brings unique and specialized skills to his job. Educated as an accountant, he
gravitated toward IT as a way to become more efficient with finances. When he came to work for
GE four years ago, his skill set was well suited to help bring Home Lending's business units into
a tighter information orbit.
"When I first came to GE I was in pricing, which is helping set the rates we charge customers,"
explained Backhouse. "I had to work across many of the businesses and made a great many
contacts. That, coupled with my IT and accounting background, really helped me in my new role
in Business Metrics. A lot of people now come to me and my team for information about many
topics."
Backhouse said that expertise in one or multiple topics is vital to your personal business success
and the success of the company.
"Because my team has knowledge across several areas, we can help determine which issues
are important and the issues that are less important. This helps us prioritize our work. We can
then bring in a network of the right people for information and answers. I see our role as helping
guide others to the right decisions."

Richard has always been a sounding board with a difference when you raise something with him he draws
on his vast knowledge to resolve the various issues. He brings light to the dark data tunnel. His knowledge
on Data Warehouse is vast but he can relate that functionally to what is to be achieved or should be looked
at.
