2. This binary tradition is still strong and forms a
kind foundation for many varieties
structuralism.
There is an ancient tradition of binary or
dichotomous thinking of framing issue in terms
of opposites such as sunmoon,
reasonpassion.
That is, binary thinking can serve to encourge
difference indeed, encourage non-dominance,
non-transcendence, instability, disorder.
3. The answer is to get ride of binary thinking it’s
too pat and limited.
First there is no hope of getting away from
binary oppositions given the nature of the
human mind and situation.
Binary thinking seems to be the path of least
resistance for the perceptual system, foe
thinking and for linguistic structure.
The easiest way to classify complex
information is to clump it into two piles.
4. Now apply this balancing kind of binary thinking
to three examples:
1. Writing
2. Teaching
3. Thinking/learning
5. We cannot write well unless, on the one hand,
we are able to come with a plenitude of words
and thoughts an ability that is enchanced by a
welcoming attitude of open accepting where
we refrained from evaluating and criticizing.
Writing skill involves skill at generating and
criticizing .
6. The same kind of conflict lies at the teaching
process.
We can heighten our awareness of this conflict
of teaching stances or roles by nothing how
student often skitter ungracefully between
confiding is us as allies and guarding against
us as adversaries.
Most teachers are stuck to having to occupy
one point along the continuum that students
know so well : from being “though teacher” to
being “easy teacher”.
7. Same contradiction at the heat of the
intellectual process itself: a conflict between
doubting and believing.
The centrality of doubting is obvious.
8. First the dichotomy between the private and
social dimension of writing.
The current conversation seems to have
foundered on the polarity itself.
Argument for affirming both sides equally, not
a compromise but rather to push for extremity
in both directions and for resisting attempts at
priority or hegemony by either side.
The opposed side can work together and
reinforce each other when all goes well.
