This document discusses how Industry 4.0 technologies like cloud computing, mobile apps, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things can transform manufacturing by automating and integrating industrial systems. It profiles two Pacific Northwest companies, Xemelgo and Orion Industries, that are partnering to bring these Industry 4.0 technologies to manufacturing facilities through solutions like inventory management, work order tracking, and monitoring inter-facility shipments. The document argues that these technologies enable real-time access to production data and dynamic optimization of manufacturing operations.

8. Cloud Computing - Before & After
• Solutions typically deployed in an IT closet
• Requires equipment, expertise, power, cooling,
network bandwidth, etc
• Deep collaboration with IT team
• Difficult to secure & upgrade
• Solutions can be one or two decades old
• Solutions run in Amazon Web Services,
Microsoft Azure, or the vendor’s cloud
• No computer hardware or expertise required
• On-demand pay-as-you- go models
• Security built-in as a feature
• Software upgrades automatically in real-time
9. Mobile - Before & After
• Leaders have to constantly go back to their
desk to access systems.
• Legacy systems are ultra-complex; requiring
extensive training & support.
• Issues found by running time-intensive reports
and sifting through mountains of data.
• Access your data and applications from
anywhere in the world.
• Mobile apps are designed for ease of use; no
user manuals or complex classroom training.
• Mobile notifications alert you to operational
issues in real-time.
10. Artificial Intelligence - Before & After
• Production scheduling boards updated
manually.
• Leaders and team members making decisions
based on stale data.
• Production schedule constantly invalidated
based on new information.
• Real-time visibility to your end-to-end
operation.
• Bottlenecks detected and communicated
automatically.
• Schedules dynamically updated and
distributed based on real-time information.
11. Internet of Things - Before & After
• Need to personally visit machines in order to
assess their current state.
• Lack of visibility into utilization rates.
• Maintenance schedule typically based on
calendar time.
• Monitor & manage machines from anywhere
in the world.
• Machines notify leaders & team members if
they are idle or operating under capacity.
• Machines alert leaders when they need
maintenance.

The Cotton Gin could do the work of
Made in China 2025 is a strategic initiative launched by the Chinese government.
“Comprehensively upgrade Chinese industry.”
10 key sectors. And, one of those that is interesting to us in the PNW is Aviation.
China is currently scheduled to buy 7000 planes from Boeing over the next 2 decades. This is over $1 trillion dollars worth of planes. We can expect them to be coming after us in the Aerospace market.
Industrie 4.0 is a massive movement in Germany around “Securing the future of German manufacturing”.
Germany actually has 6 of the top 7 manufacturing companies in Europe. And, they are pushing super hard to maintain their lead.
Japan has Society 5.0. Aging population and they are working to apply technology to make life easier and more efficient.
Build robots that can take over work tasks for humans as they age out of the workforce.
As you can see there is tremendous disruption coming into the manufacturing sector. And, as we saw many countries around the world are launching organized initiatives in this area. They basically have national moon missions around manufacturing.
In the PNW we are no strangers to disruption. We may not be as flashy as other regions of the world, and we may not beat our chests too loudly. But we have completely dominated every industry that we have gone after.
And, it is not just industrial or tech. We have been dominated both industrial and tech.
Seattle was pretty much born on the lumber industry.
Boeing has dominated the aerospace industry for almost a century.
Microsoft virtually created the PC industry and Amazon has created and dominated both the eCommerce and cloud computing spaces.
Now that we are heading in to the Industrial IoT Revolution – it is really time for us to bring all of our learnings and best practices together.
As a region, we need to combine our industrial knowledge with our technology knowledge.
If we are able to do that then there is no reason why the Pacific Northwest cannot emerge as a dominant leader in the Industrial IoT revolution.
I would argue that we’re better positioned than Germany. We’re better positioned than China, Japan and the others. But, as they are – we need to begin attacking this opportunity together as an aligned team.
And, that is exactly why CAMPS exists today. CAMPS exists to bring us together - so that we can compete and win as a community. This is a truly massive opportunity for all of is the PNW.
