2. INTRODUCTION
• Currently, same-sex marriage is legal in 32 countries.
• Philippines is not among the countries that have legalized same-sex marriage.
• Marriage is a sacred bond formed by devoted man and woman only. Hence the
union of woman loving woman and man loving man is not acceptable.
• In this study we will discuss to all of you why we need to normalize same-sex
marriage.
• And we will discuss what is the effect of the legalization of same-sex marriage on
LGBTQIA+ individuals.
3. METHODOLOGY
• The researchers utilized an inductive method by grounded theory using
qualitative.
• The respondents of the study were 87 LGBTQIA+ individuals.
• Data collection took over 1 week (October 5 to October 12, 2022).
• The survey was conducted online, using Google Forms.
• To allow the voices of participants to guide the analysis, an inductive method was
chosen. 5 members of LGBTQIA+ community were asked to review the analysis.
5. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Making oneself real to people
"I think gay marriage will change the way I see our
relationship, and other lgbtqia+ relationships too. I mean, I
feel the same way about my girlfriend, I love her anyhow but I
feel like our relationship will be just different because other
people will see our connections as real."
6. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Civil advantages for genuine relationships
"I feel strange saying this, but the ability to obtain a real marriage
license from the state and share benefits such as health insurance,
property ownership makes homosexual relationships appear to
suddenly count. Yes of course, we counted before but legalizing
same-sex marriage, feels like we count even more.”
7. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Certain Heterosexuals
"I assume, society's approval of gay marriage will encourage the
everyone and me also to value lgbtqia+ couples' relationship even
better and it will strengthen me because I will be sure it will change
how our family perceives our relationship.”
9. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Becoming true to ourselves
"I've been committed in long term relationship. But something
about the word marriage makes it feel more real and serious to
me. Marriage takes on extra meaning because it makes a
relationship more concrete.”
"Getting married and having it in legal way, it will bind us in a
more tangible way. It will make our relationship more real.”
10. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
Respondents illustrated that the potential effect of same-sex marriage
on same-sex relationships extends beyond the legal benefits of civil
recognition and affects perceptions of same-sex relationships both
within and outside of same-sex couples. Participants recognized that
same-sex marriage would undoubtedly make the same-sex
relationship more real to others as well as to the partners. Some see
that it makes same-sex relationships appear more visible as a benefit,
while others see it as a burden.
11. CONCLUSION
This study differs from previous research is that the researcher
examined not just the participants who are currently in a relationship
but also who are those unpartenered ones. That is why more
complete picture of the implications of gay marriage for the
LGBTQIA+ community is provided. And also this study reflects
participants' perceptions of legally recognized same-sex marriage as
an impending reality rather than a hypothetical possibility.
12. CONCLUSION
This study is limited in two ways.
First, Participants were required to have Internet access in
order to participate in the data collection method, this may
have resulted in a bias in the sample, such that those
without computer skills and those who does not have
internet connection were not adequately represented.
