3. Cupid and Psyche
There was once a king who had
three daughters, but the
youngest, Psyche, excelled her
sisters.
4. Cupid and Psyche As word
spread of
Psyche’s beauty,
worship of the
actual goddess
was neglected
and Aphrodite got
mightily pissed.
5. Cupid and Psyche
Aphrodite
summoned her
winged son [Cupid]
and implored him
to make Psyche fall
in love with “the
vilest and most
despicable
creature.”
6. Cupid and Psyche
Unfortunately for Aphrodite, Cupid
found Psyche just as lovely as everyone
else. He himself fell in love with Psyche.
7. Cupid and Psyche
As he looked upon her, it was as
if he had shot one of his arrows to
his own heart.
8. Cupid and Psyche
Cupid begged
Apollo to help him,
giving an oracle to
let Psyche’s family
bring her to the
summit of a rocky
hill, saying that…
9. Cupid and Psyche
“her destined husband,
a fearful winged
serpent, stronger than
the gods themselves,
would come to her and
make her his wife.”
10. Cupid and Psyche Cupid gave
Psyche servants, a
mansion to live
in, and all the
gifts; however,
he bid Psyche
not to steal a
glance at him.
12. Cupid and Psyche Without
seeing her
husband,
Psyche knew
that he was
not a monster
but a lover
she longed
for.
13. Cupid and Psyche
It was not until Psyche’s sisters
visited that she was persuaded to
take a look of Cupid.
14. Cupid and Psyche Psyche trusted her
sisters so that night
she tried to gaze at
the sleeping Cupid.
There she saw that no
hideous beast was
there but a beautiful
and charming young
god.
15. Cupid and Psyche
Her unsteady hands
made “some hot oil fall
from the lamp upon
Cupid’s shoulder,”
making him awake.
Without saying a word,
Cupid left as he said,
“Love cannot live
where there is no trust.”
16. Cupid and Psyche Psyche found Cupid
no where so she
went to Aphrodite
for help.
Aphrodite hated
Psyche, thereby
she gave Psyche
difficult tasks.
17. Cupid and Psyche The first task: to sort
out a great quantity of
wheat barley, beans
and lentils in the
storehouse before the
darkness fell.
Aphrodite returned
and found out that she
accomplished the task.
18. Cupid and Psyche The second task:
to get a sample
of the golden
fleeces.Psyche
obediently fulfill
Aphrodite’s
task
19. Cupid and Psyche
The third task: to fill a flask
with water from the black
waterfall of river Styx. An
eagle helped to complete this
task.
20. Cupid and Psyche
Aphrodite was shocked when Psyche
accomplished the third task. Once again
Aphrodite was not satisfied and so she
gave Psyche her last task.
21. Cupid and Psyche
The last task: to
fill a small box
with some beauty
from Persephone.
Psyche was able to fill the
box of beauty but she
must not open it.
22. Cupid and Psyche
Psyche thought she could use
some of the beauty to look
lovelier for Cupid. So
curiosity drove Psyche to
open the box.
23. Cupid and Psyche
However, there was
nothing in the box but
“a deadly languor.”
It took possession of
her and Psyche fell
into a heavy sleep.
24. Cupid and Psyche
Cupid was now
healed of his
wound. He
found Psyche
and prick her
from one of his
arrows, then she
finally woke up.
25. Cupid and Psyche Cupid pleaded
Zeus to make
Psyche his
wife and
immortal. The
assemblage of
gods consent
Cupid and
Psyche’s
marriage.
26. Cupid and Psyche
So all came to a most happy end. Cupid
and Psyche had sought and, after some
trials, found each other; and that union
could never be broken.”
