Use of the present
continuous and future time.
• The present continuous is a verbal tense that indicates an action that is occurring at the
moment in which it is spoken. It is quite similar to, for example, 'eating', 'walking', 'saying',
etc. In colloquial English it also means something that is going to happen very soon.
Example.
• I am studying for my exam - I am studying for my exam
• I am cleaning the house - I am cleaning the house
• Robert is driving to the supermarket - Robert is driving to the supermarket
• The mechanic is fixing our car - The mechanic is fixing our car.
In English, the present continuous is also used to express
the future. There is also a different structure to express the
future but it is very common to use the present continuous
in informal situations. It is very similar to situations where
the present is used in Spanish to talk about the future. For
example:
We are going on vacation next week
I am going to Sandra’s house tomorrow
Are you arriving tonight?
Are you coming to visit us in April?
