The focus intoday’s workshop/rehearsal is: To applybasicjazztechniquestochoreography.
Lessonobjective:To learnand applybasicjazztechniquestoa shortroutine.
Therefore,my (SMART) short target for this workshop/rehearsal is: My target fortoday isto learn
all of the techniquesforfuture reference andalsoensure Ican performtwoof the techniques
accuratelyand princely.
Summary of the lesson:Intoday’slessonwe learntsome new jazztechniqueswhichwill helpusto
improve ourknowledgewithindance.We learntashortroutine includingsome jazztechniquesfrom
today’slesson.Iexecutedthe jazz techniquesaccuratelybyfollowingall the instructionsstepbystep
so that I knewexactlywhatwaswantedfromme.
What have we done today? Firstof all I warmedup;I warmedupto ensure thatmy muscleswere
readyfor the routinesfollowing.Warmingupisimportanttoensure yourmusclesbecome flexible
and loose,warmingupwakesyouyourmusclesslowlysothatyouare readyto start exercising.
Finallywe warmupto focusour mindand warmup the body.I warmedup byjoggingthiswasmy
pulse raiserasit increasedmyheartrate.NextIisolatedcertainbodypartsbydoingshoulderroles
and knee lifts,thisistoincrease jointmobility.AfterthatIdidsome pliesandside bendsthiswasto
stretchmy largermuscle groups,thisiscalleddynamicstretching.Once Ihaddone thatI didsome
simple frontkicksdownthe roomas these were exercisesrelatedtothe technique classtofollow.I
didthisto be preparedforthe movestofollow;doingthese frontkicksgave me aflavourof what
was to come throughoutthe class.A warm up increasesourheartrate causingour bloodflow to
increase;thismeansthatmore bloodisgoingto the workingmuscleswhichcause musclestoreceive
more oxygenandnutrients.
Duringtoday’slessonwe practicedthree waysof leaping,Ilearnttwonew waystoleap,asI already
knewhowto doone of them.These leapswere abushleapthisisthe one that I alreadyknew how
to do,we alsolearnta stag leapwhichiswhere one legisbentandthe otherlegis straight.Finally
we learnthowto do a developpeleap(thisiswhere youunfoldthe leg.We alsopracticedthe
correct wayto do frontkicksand side kicks,the correctway to do kicksare to keepyourhipsfacing
forwardwithyouback straight,stomachmusclespulledinand pointedtoes.The aimisto getthe
correct technique ratherthathowhighyoucan kick yourleg.Afterwe hadlearntthese specificskills
we startedto learna routine includingafew of these moves,we alsoaddedsome of the Horton
technique we learnt previouslyandsome Fosse stylechoreographytothe routine.
Strengths: Identifyand describe strengthof the workshop/rehearsal,and explainwhy. My
strengthwasmy turn outand pointedtoes,asI alwayspointedmytoeswithoutbeingaskedasIfind
thisnatural;thisis because Ihave beendancingsince the age of sevensoI automaticallypointmy
toes.(My preferredstyleisballetandyoualwayshave topointyourtoeswhenperforming/learning
any balletchoreographyortechnique).Ialsobelievedmy kickswere mystrengthasIhad good
control.
A weaknessof the workshop/rehearsal,and explainwhy?How could you improve on this? I think
my weaknesswasmyturnsas I struggledwhenperformingthese.Ineedtopractice spottingasI can
neverkeepmyfocusonthe same spot.

2. 1. What progresshave you made so far? The progressIhave made is on mykicksas I can now
performthese withaccuracy,howeverIneedtorememberdon’ttrytopushmy legtoo highas I will
lose the control.
2. Whydo you think this is? I thinkthisas I have good control of my legswhenkickingandIalso
naturallypointmytoeswhenkicking.One otherthingisthatIalwaysturn out frommy hips,whichis
importantwhenkickingasyoudo notwant to roll inwardssicklingthe foot(sicklingthe footisa
dance term forrollingthe footinwards).
3. Whathave you done to ensure an improvement? To ensure Isee an improvementIhave set
myself little targetstodofor eachtechnique sothatwhenI nextperformthemtheywill be better.
4. How might you ensure you make furtherimprovement? I will practice these exercisesweeklyto
ensure Iam makingfurtherimprovements,Iwill startbydoinglittle exercisesandworkupto the
fullytechnique.
