2. Cement in India: Overview
● With a projected consumption of nearly 400 million
metric tonnes (for 2017), India is the second largest
consumer of cement in the world.
● It’s also one of the largest producers of cement, with the
cement production seeing double digits growth rate.

4. Cement in India: Overview
(contd.)
● A large number of plants still use outdated technology,
making their production process inefficient and
expensive.
● The “technology gap” is further increasing because of
rapid rise in demand (especially from North-East Asia.

6. Emerging
Practices
A look at the new forms of cement
plant technologies emerging in
the Indian scene that help cement
manufacturers to optimize their
production process.
7. 1. ‘Max Feed’ for the Separator
● Grinding the feed to as coarse as possible and then filling
the Separator to the maximum capacity.
● Coarse feed increases the separation efficiency.
● Some plants also increase the air-velocity through the
mill. (The Separator has to be fine-tuned accordingly).
● Works best in plants working with closed circuits and high
efficiency separators.
8. 2. Over-grinding of Feed
● The particle size that results in the strongest constitution of cement ranges
from 3µ to 30µ.
● The objective is to increase the concentration of these particles in the final
output. This can be achieved by monitoring the PSD (Particle Size
Distribution)
● If the concentration of <3µ particles is more than 5%, then over grinding the
feed is a solution.
● However, that would increase energy consumption of the mill.
● Therefore, coarse over-grinding with high mill velocity is the best way to
reduce the concentration of <3µ particles and enhance the energy efficiency.
9. 3. Introduction of ‘New Variables’
● The most common way of gauging the produce quality is by
measuring the “Blaine” value.
● New research into production science shows that there are
better variables to check the quality.
● Blaine must be measured in conjunction with the value of
residues for a given circulation load.
● Lower the percentage of residue with respect to Blaine, the
higher the power efficiency of the plant.
