Ravenna Future Lessons 2014
Editor's Notes
I’ve arranged my presentation according some questions you might have on this topic
Let’s start defining it
In preparing the slides I tried to put myself in your shoes
In 1999, When I was sitting there I was puzzled by technological innovation
I remember that Matrix movie was just released, and there is nice quote of Morpheus that represent quite well my feelings at that time, which I think are the same feelings you have right now looking at cloud
Just before the blue versus red pills, Morpheus says to Neo: …
There is a huge confusion on cloud, and I think that—in looking at it—most of you are like Alices
From this viewpoint, presentations out there don’t help much because they have 2 problems
1. They are over-focused of technological issues—speaking a language that is not understandable by a normal human being
2. Those who do not fall into technical details are most of the time interested in selling you something
I don’t have anything to sell you, and I won’t enter into technological details.
I’m interested in providing you with a clear idea of cloud, and in analyzing its implications
Most of the presentations that I’ve seen take much for granted and…
The end result is that—to continue the parallel with Matrix, and exploiting a quote of The Oracle—it seems that being a cloud master (someone who truly understand cloud) is just like…
To crack the meaning of Cloud computing we have to simplify, and to embrace a comprehensive perspective (not only technological or a marketing ones)
2 minutes
So what is cloud computing?
It’s a model… Just think to the cellphone through which Neo and other Rebels in Matrix accessed to
A shared pool… In Matrix these resources were a virtual armory, in real settings they are servers, applications, services, etc.
These resources can be… Do you remember Neo plugging a cable in his head and learning kung-fu in a while?
Similarly, cloud computing allows individuals and firms to exploit digital resources provided by third parties—without investing in internally developing these resources
I don’t want that you go out telling people that cloud is like Matrix, but Matrix allows us to remember the basic principles of cloud: an enabling technology, complemented by a business model based on allowing to dynamically leverage a pool of digital resources
By the way this is the definition of NIST, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in USA
On-demand self-service. A consumer can provision computing capabilities as needed automatically without requiring human interaction with each service provider.
Resource pooling. The provider’s computing resources are pooled and dynamically assigned to serve multiple consumers, according to their demands.
Rapid elasticity. Resources can be elastically provisioned and released, to scale rapidly
Measured service. Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and, thus, improved
The video put one thing clear: we tend to prefer saving our photos in public cloud services because we don’t want to loose them
But it’s not true only for photos.
It’s true also for emails.
Here we not only we benefit from almost infinite space, but also from the improvements that are made automatically and remotely—without any intervention from the user.
We don’t have to reinstall GMail whenever a new feature comes out, we don’t have to install anything at all.
But it’s not only programs. Let’s think of music.
The diffusion of broadband, together with cloud-based solutions change our need of owning things.
We think its far away more important to access them.
And there are new economic models emerging: monthly fees to access all stuffs, pay-per-use, pay-by-commercials, etc.
Cloud changed the way we exchange files.
How many of you still use USB pens? We are not talking about some prehistoric thing—I don’t know: CD— we are talking about something that came into mass market a couple of years ago.
Now we use Dropbox, or similars—which enable the possibility to work on the same documents at the same time, to automatically backup and sync seamlessly among different devices
More generally, cloud changed the way we build, develop, store, access knowledge—allowing us to focus on contents and making all the underlying technology necessary to develop these contents almost invisible and decoupled
The best answer I can give is the value of the cloud computing market: 150 billion of dollars
It’s a small or a big number? I would say that it’s quite big
It’s more than the Gross Domestic Product of many countries like Cuba, Iraq or New Zeland
A first changing is the creation of an industry of players that simply didn’t exist before
Many changes can be perceived at a technological level—especially to Information Systems
Information systems are the digital technologies through which data, information and knowledge flows within firms
Cloud is producing e see a shift in information systems, that from a traditional, home-grown nature…
… are changing to modern configurations based on hybrid forms of private and public Cloud services
This is a huge change since firms have to completely rethink the architecture of their Information systems
Most of the changes are however organizational
Here in the slide I’ve put the four main organizational benefits enabled by cloud solutions
Virtuality: allowing employees to work wherever and whenever they want, cloud allows firms to combine profitability and employee satisfaction
Agility: cloud enable the dynamic implementation of new strategic choices in less time, this is quite useful in the turbolent scenario in which firms have to compete
Openness: cloud pushes firms in effectively interacting with third parties—recognizing that innovation can be realized not only within the firm itself
Customization: cloud solutions allow to personalize the digital solutions to the specific needs of their users
Let’s start with the dimension of the market: 500 million of €—million not the billion see before
Again, is it a small or a big number? It’s a small one: only 3% of the whole Italian ICT market
The good news is that this number is increasing in a context of decreasing investments delivered to digital technologies
But it’s still too small to fully realize the impact it might have
1,5 6
We can compare Italy with other countries. How?
On the horizontal axis let’s put an index explaining ICT development
On the vertical axis let’s consider the Compount Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of public cloud
Finally, let’s consider the expenditure in public cloud per capita—avoiding any dimensional effect and making things comparable
The result is that other countries are getting the real opportunity of introducing Cloud in order to improve their competitiveness, while Italy is increasing the digital gap not only with best performers.
So… Are we missing also the “train” of cloud computing? I think that data impose to not be so pessimistic
My university has an observatory that each year study the Italian cloud economy
I promised you that I wouldn’t enter into the detail, but let’s consider just three cold facts
In 2011, 44% of Italian firms tested or evaluated the introduction of cloud solution: we can refer to this phase as a piloting one
In 2012 cloud encountered a diffusion. In fact, 47% of Italian firms—mostly the big ones—extensively used cloud in their daily activities
Last year, we have seen that 43% of Italian firms increased their budget in cloud—in a context of deep crisis
Moreover, the majority of Italian firms using cloud have experienced the aforementioned benefits

To put a long story short, I see two kind of firms
On the one hand, those who look at cloud only as a problem: they don’t understand it due to a lack of vision
On the other hand, those who successfully leverage cloud to combine cost reduction with performance improvement
It’s a matter of vision. Most guys still do not see the paradigmatic shift cloud has brought into our lives and our work
This events help in remembering ourselves that we have to decide in which world do we wanna live
