It was Originated in
New England; Place of
Little Compton of Rhode
Island Province (U.S.A).
The development of RIR
begun in 1854 by

RIR was originated and developed from Game, Asiatic & Mediterranean
birds. The following breeds were likely used in the development of RIR.

10. History & Naming Of RIR
In the late 19th century,
William Tripp
purchased Red Malay Rooster
from his fellow Sailor.
He took the bird to his house and
crossed with the chicken of his own
flock.
He saw the new offspring were able to
lay more eggs than the previous
chickens he had.
Then, he started cross breeding with
other breeds of chicken with the help
of his friend John Macomber. Then
the resulting birds were being called
“Tripp’s Fowl” or “Macomber’s Fowl”

In that time,
(Asuccessfulpoultrymanof Rhode Island)was
looking to create an improved Dual
Purposed Chicken.
Then, he purchased a number of
“Tripp’s Fowl ” and started his own cross
breeding program.
After several years, developed his
desired chickens which were very productive
in Meat and Egg production.
Later on, named the
chickens as Rhode Island Red (RIR)
according to the name of his Province
(Rhode Island) and the Plumage color of the
bird (Red).

13. Varieties of RIR
(1) Single Comb Variety:
- Large , upright single comb.
- More common.
(2) Rose Comb Variety:
- Smaller than single comb.
- Less common.
There are 2 different Varieties of R I R .

(1) Standard RIR:
-Larger than Bantam RIR.
-Weight: Male- 3.85 kg
Female- 2.95 kg
(2) Bantam RIR:
-Smaller than Standard RIR
-Weight: Male- 790-910 gm
Female- 680-790 gm
There are 2 Types of R I R .

15. Egg Production Profile of RIR
 RIR is good egg layer.
 The Commercial RIR strains
comparatively produce
more eggs than Heritage RIR Strain
and start early laying than
Heritage Strains.
Egg color : Brown
Egg Size : Large
Age of Laying : 16-20 weeks
Egg Production Quantity : 5-6 eggs/week
: 250-300 eggs/Year

16. Meat Production Profile of RIR
 RIR produces good amount of meat
with superb flavor.
 The Heritage strains of RIR is
comparatively larger and produce
more meat than commercial strain.
Standard Body Weight:
Cock : 3.85 kg
Cockerel : 3.60 kg
Hen : 2.95 kg
Pullet : 2.50 kg

They love to eat grasses, weeds,
insects through foraging.
Less requirement of commercial feed.
 Predator – Savvy :
Extremely cautious and alert.
Their Plumage color help them to blend in background.
 Don’t Go Broody :
Don’t hide egg after laying.
Produce large number of eggs.

Official State bird of Rhode Island
State of U.S.A
It was designated in 1954.
In A p r i l 1 4 , 1 9 8 2 , the
U n i t e d S t a t e s P o s t a l S e r v i c e s
issued a C o m m e m o r a t i v e S t a m p
remembering RIR .
In 1954, State of Rhode Island
celebrated the centenary of the breed RIR
by unveiling the
“ Rhode Island Red Monument ”.
