3. Introduction
• Why air pollution?
• Without food 5 weeks
• Without water 5 days
• Without air ??
• 22,000 times in a day a human being breaths
• Approx. 16 kg of air gets introduced into the
body
4. Historical background
• First source can be assigned to natural sources
• British Parliament passed a act in 1273
forbidding the burning of coal in London
• In 1300 King Edward I issued a royal
proclamation “Whosever shall be found guilty
of burning coal shall suffer the loss of his
head”
• Queen Victoria shifted her residence to much
cleaner Nottingham
5. Composition of air
• Clean dry air contains
– 78.09 % Nitrogen
– 20.94 % Oxygen
– Water vapour 1%
– Inert gases (Argon)
0.97%
– Carbon dioxide and
other gases 0.03%
6. Air pollution
•According to World Health Organization air
pollution may be defined as
“Substances put into the air by the activity of
mankind into concentration sufficient to cause
harmful effect to his health, vegetation,
property or interferences with the enjoyment
of his property.”
7. Air pollutants
• What are air pollutants
– Air pollutants are those substances (solid, liquid or
gases) which when mixes with the atmospheric air
causes air pollution.
– Air Pollutants leads to air pollution
8. Sources of air pollutants
• There are four different ways to classify the
air pollutants. They are on the basis of
– Sources
– Physical state
– Origin and chemical reactions
– Mobility
