2. In this presentation I will explain how to show a pig. The
most important things that you need to know is the low and
high cuts of meat, structure of a hog , where to hit a pig and
how to move a pig. I learned this from raising and showing a
pig at the 2012 fair. It is fairly easy to learn.
3. These are the
supplies that you
will need for show.
You will need a
show brush and
some source of a
moving tool.
Show cane, neon
pig pipe, pig whip
and or a pig stick.
4. These are the
supplies that you
will need in general.
The supplies that
you will need is a
brush to scrub your
hog(s). A source of
soap. I used mane
‘n tail shampoo.
Another supply that
you want to have on
hand is a spray
bottle.
5. When hitting a pig
you want to hit it
either on the
stomach or the
jowl.
When doing this
you are hitting it on
the low cuts of
meats. And Not the
high cuts of meat.
Using a pig whip while hitting it in
the stomach.
Hitting in a low cut of meat.
6. When hitting a pig
you want to hit it on
the low cuts of meat
not the high cuts of
meat.
(LOW CUTS)
The low cuts of meat
is were we get bacon
from.
(HIGH CUTS)
The high cuts of meat
are the picnic
shoulder , shoulder
or “Boston Butt”,
loin, and ham.
7. POSITION
A main part of moving your hog is a position.
The position that I’m talking about is what side you want to be
on when showing your hog.
The positions are mainly like this when the judge is on your
right you are on the left side of your hog , and when the judge is
on your left you are on the right side of your hog. Those two are the
most important thing when showing a pig.
You also want to make sure while doing this that you are trying to
keep your hog(s) (depending on what class) out in front of the
judge. By doing this the judge is able to see both sides of the hog,
front, and the back side.
8. Structure is another
important thing because
most judges pay
attention to the structure
of your hog.
The structure that you
want to have is so that
your hog looks like a
bone. The pig should
have a wide front,
smaller in the
middle(belly) and wider
in the back.
9. Conclusion
Showing a hog is simple. You need to have a pig, show
supplies, you should work with the hog and know your
pigs. You should know where to hit your pig as to move
them so you don’t bruise the meat. Keep you hog out
in front of the Judge. You need to pay attention to the
Judge on show day as to where he is placing you in
competition. Main thing is to stay calm and to have fun.
