Project Soli, a new, robust, high-resolution, low-power, miniature gesture sensing technology for human-computer interaction based on millimeter-wave radar
3. What is project soli ?
Project Soli is a sensor that uses the radar technology can easily be used in even
the smallest wearables that fits within a tiny chip.
It is a radar based sensing technology used in smaller devices for motion sensing
to perform various task.
It has a very small radar range and consumes less energy unlike military based
radar technology.
It is capable of accurately detecting your hand movements in real-time.
It’s like Leap Motion and other gesture-tracking controllers.
Soli Chip
4. About project soli
o The founder of the project is Ivan Poupyrev.
o It was announced by Google in Google I/O Conference in 2015.
o The soli is small in size of a 5x5 mm and made up of a silicon.
o It has a sensor which capture submillimeter of motions of fingers in 3D space.
o The team has created a radar which has the interaction sensor running at 60GHz.
o It captures motions of fingers at a phenomenal rate of 10,000 frames per second.
5. Working
The tiny circuit board is able determine the hand size, motion and velocity.
It then uses machine-learning to translate these movements to pre-programmed
commands .
Doppler effect is used to detect speed.
6. Applications
o The Soli chip can be embedded in wearables, phones, computers, cars and IoT
devices in our environment.
o Soli has no moving parts, it fits onto a chip and consumes little energy. It is not
affected by light conditions and it works through most materials.
7. Advantages
Allows to control Gadgets with gestures.
Replace all kinds of buttons and switches and make the devices operable
remotely.
Allows free hand typing.
Good Accuracy over control.
Need not to carry gadgets while using them.
8. Soli gesture recognition
o The Soli software architecture consists of a generalized gesture recognition pipeline
which is hardware agnostic and can work with different types of radar.
o The Soli libraries extract real-time signals from radar hardware, outputting signal
transformations, high precision position and motion data, and gesture labels and
parameters at frame rates from 100 to 10,000 frames per second.
9. Soli based devices
o Google launched its Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL series smartphones based on project
soli.
o Soli chip will be integrated on the front of the device which will recognize the
motion gestures performed by the user.
o It can perform any task on the device without touching the smartphone screen.
o It will combine the radar based motion sensing and deep learning technology to
understand the input given by users to perform the task.
