46. The first of this now extinct Olympic event was considered a part of gymnastics—
appeared at the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896 and was also the most intense.
The equipment used was 14 meters high, just shy of 46 feet. It would never again
come close to that height, with the next-highest coming in more than 13 feet
shorter.
The 1896 competition originally had to be postponed due to darkness, but when it
was brought back the next morning, a whole five people showed up to compete.
Only the two Greek competitors fully completed the competition, with Nikolaos
Andriakopoulos taking first place in 23.4 seconds. Standings were supposed to be
based on both time and style (L- hold), but sadly the rules for how style was
evaluated have not survived. In the instances where this event was contested for
individual medals but not the all-around, ranking the gymnasts solely on time
proved less of a problem.

48. “X and Y” is a really famous dessert served at one of the most prestigious
annual event. It is reported that 140,000 X and 10,000 liters of Y were
served during the 2015 edition of the event. X is a harbinger of summer and
being a perishable food, it was available only during a very short period of
time which luckily happened to coincide with the duration of the event.
According to the Independent, X and Y were first served together in 1509,
when Cardinal Thomas Wosley paired them at a banquet during Henry
VIII's reign. The combination stuck and nearly 400 years later was among
the offerings at the first edition of this prestigious event in 1877.
