2. MEANING
• Trade union is a voluntary association of
workers which is formed to protect the rights
and interests of workers, to prevent exploitation
of workers by the employer and to establish
good relations between the employer and
employees.
• “Strength lies in unity” is the basic idea behind
the trade union movement.
3. DEFINITION
• SEC.2(b) of the Trade Union Act, 1926:
“A trade union is any combination of persons,
whether temporary or permanent, primarily for
the purpose of regulating the relation between
workers and employers or between workers
and workers and for imposing restrictive
conditions on the conduct of any trade or
business and includes the federation of two or
more trade unions.”

“A trade union is a continuing, long term
association of employees, formed and
maintained for the specific purpose of
advancing and protecting the interest of
members in their working relationships.”
• V. V. Giri:
“Trade union is a voluntary organization of
workers formed to promote and protect their
interests by collective action.”
6. FUNCTIONS
• Increasing co-operation and well-being among
workers.
• Securing facilities for workers.
• Establishing contacts between the workers and
the employees.
• Trade Unions working for the progress of the
employees.
• Safe guarding the interest of the workers.
• Provisions of labor welfare.

CRAFT UNION
• If the workers of the
same craft or category of
the job form into an union
is called craft union.
• These union also called a
“Horizontal Union”.
GENERAL UNION
• If the workers of any
industry, any region and
of any job or occupation
form into an union in
order to protect the
overall interest of
workers, such unions are
called General union.
9. INDUSTRIAL UNION
• If the workers of different
categories form into a
union, that union is called
Industrial union.
• These union also called
“Vertical Union”.
FEDERATION &
CONFEDERATION
• Industrial unions, either of
the some industry or of the
different industry may form
into an association in order
to improve Trade Union
unity/strength. Such a
union of unions are called
federation.
• During the critical
situations ,
unions/federation in
different industries may
resort to concerted action
without losing their
individuality. In such
situations, the federation
form into an association
and such an association is
called confederation.
