THE ANDAMAN AND NICOBAR ISLANDS, ONE OF THE SEVEN UNION TERRITORIES OF
INDIA, ARE A GROUP OF ISLANDS AT THE JUNCTURE OF THE BAY OF BENGAL AND
ANDAMAN SEA.

THE TERRITORY IS 150 KM (93 MI) NORTH OF ACEH IN INDONESIA AND
SEPARATED FROM THAILAND AND MYANMAR BY THE ANDAMAN SEA. IT
COMPRISES TWO ISLAND GROUPS, THE ANDAMAN ISLANDS AND THE NICOBAR
ISLANDS, SEPARATED BY THE 10°N PARALLEL, WITH THE ANDAMANS TO THE
NORTH OF THIS LATITUDE, AND THE NICOBAR'S TO THE SOUTH. THE ANDAMAN
SEA LIES TO THE EAST AND THE BAY OF BENGAL TO THE WEST.
THE TOTAL LAND AREA OF THESE ISLANDS IS APPROXIMATELY 8,249 KM2 (3,185 SQ. MI).

8. ‘’HISTORY.
➤ around 65,000 years ago: The first migrants
from Africa populate this islands.
➤ 1014-1042: RAJENDRA CHOLA conquers the
Andaman and Nicobar islands to use them as a

expedition against The SRIWIJAYA EMPIRE.

➤ 1756: The Nicobar islands were made a danish
colony, first named new Denmark and later as

➤ Cellular jail is also known as KALA PANI.
➤ Kala pani is Colonial Prison in Andaman
and Nicobar islands.
➤ Cellular jail is the most prominent symbol
of Britain’s colonial domination and India’s
undaunted Revolutionary sprit.
➤ In 1890 a two-member committee
suggested the construction of new jail at
port Blair to impart solitary confinement
on the lines of the CANNON or jail in
KERALA.

LAKSHADWEEP FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE LACCADIVE, MINICOY, AND AMINIDIVI
ISLANDS IS A GROUP OF ISLANDS IN THE LACCADIVE SEA, 200 TO 440 KILOMETRES
(120 TO 270 MI) OFF THE SOUTH WESTERN COAST OF INDIA.

LAKSHADWEEP COMES FROM "LAKSHADWEEPA", WHICH MEANS "ONE HUNDRED
THOUSAND ISLANDS" IN SANSKRIT.
THEIR TOTAL SURFACE AREA IS JUST 32 KM2 (12 SQ. MI). THE LAGOON AREA
COVERS ABOUT 4,200 KM2 (1,600 SQ. MI), THE TERRITORIAL WATERS AREA
20,000 KM2 (7,700 SQ. MI) AND THE EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE AREA

24. ‘’HISTORY
➤ The oldest inhabited islands in the group are
Amini, Kalpeni Andrott, Kavaratti and Agatti.
Archaeological evidence suggests that Buddhism
prevailed in the region during the 5th-6th century
CE.
➤ According to popular tradition, Islam was brought
to Lakshadweep by an Arab named Ubaidulla in
661 CE.
➤ The Aminidivi group of islands (Androth, Amini,
Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlath and Bitra) came under
the rule of Tipu Sultan in 1787. They passed to
British control after the Third Anglo-Mysore War
and were attached to South Canara.

➤ The major tribal communities that dwell in
Lakshadweep comprise Aminidivi,
Koya's, Malmis and Melacheris. All these
tribes have their distinct status in the
community.
➤ Aminidivi Tribe of Lakshadweep:
Aminidivi’s are considered to be the first
group of people to have initiated
inhabiting these islands. They started
living in an island called Amini and in
present times it teems with Aminidivi
people.

➤ Koya Tribe of Lakshadweep: Formerly known as
Tarawadis, the Koyas are the chief land owning
class of the society. They take into account by

sailors of Koyas and helped them within their
sailing functions. They are able to pilot the vessel
successfully than the other communities.

from coconut trees.
