Descriptive Essay On Vincent Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on the 30th of March in 1853 and was born in Zundert in the Netherlands, died on July 29 in 1890. His main
focus was paintings and his mediums were oil. Most of the time he painted landscapes, cityscapes, figure and scenery. Post–impressionism was his art
style. The dimensions of the Starry Night is 2′ 5″ x 3′ 0″
and the painting is located in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
Vincent van Gogh painted the Starry Night in 1889 in the post–impressionism period and the genre of the painting is landscape.
The painting shows a night sky full of swirls of clouds, stars in the sky look like they are on fire and there is a super bright moon, which dominates
the painting. The sky keeps the viewer's eyes moving around the painting, this keeps the viewer absorbed in the painting and the sky takes up
three–quarters of the painting. Under the moving hills of the horizon is a small town. Where there is a peaceful spirit curving for the buildings. The
dark cool colours could be representing memories of our own childhood, which were filled...show more content...
There is always light to guide you, because of the beautiful stars in the sky. Van Gogh was finally cured of his many illnesses and he had found his
happy place or heaven. He knew that when he was dead he would be at peace and represents this by using the bold colours in the Starry Night.
The Starry Night has kind of a weird, he referred to the painting in a letter he send to his brother and called it "exaggerations in terms of composition."
He used bight colours which was unusual because of it is a night scene silhouettes would have been more obvious but he used lines. In this landscape
painting there is not just one main focus, but there are more points, like the big object on the left, the church, the hills and the swirling

Who Is Vincent Van Gogh?
Vincent van Gogh, a world famous artist from the late nineteenth century, is regarded as a post–impressionistic and early expressionistic artist. His
works are full of energy and very expressive such as the Starry Night, Night CafГ© and certainly the Wheatfield with Crows. In one of the letters,
which were written by the artist to his younger brother Theo, Van Gogh expressed his sensitivity in some normal scenes. "Last week, I was at
Hampton Court to see the beautiful gardens and long avenues of horse chestnuts and lime trees, in the tops of which a multitude of crows and rooks
have built their nests" (Letter 70). One could see that the artist was a sensitive, emotional and passionate person. Every bird, tree, flower or person
around him would stimulate his emotion and thoughts. When looking at the Wheatfield, it is generally associated with sadness because of the tragedy
that happened after he finished the painting. The general reception of the painting is related to personal issues of the artist like mentally broke down
situation, lack of money and unpopular aesthetic style, which lead to the sadness of the artist. Although personal issues of the artist could affect his
product to a certain extent, still, one cannot directly link the emotion of the art piece to his real–life situation. There should be another more persuasive
linkage, which could show a better and more direct connection with the art piece. Thus, by analyzing the use of colors, lines, treatment of different

Vincent Van Gogh Painting Analysis Essay
Introduction Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He was an impressionist painter who was known for his rough beauty, bold use of
color and unique techniques. Van Gogh suffered from severe anxiety and a form of mental illness which is apparent in his later pieces. Sadly Van
Gogh passed away from a self inflicted gunshot wound in 1890 at age 30. His magnificent works of art were not fully appreciated while he was
living; however they have now earned him great respect and appreciation. Fig. 1 The Potato Eaters 1885 The Potato Eaters was one of Van Gogh's
early works as he just stepped onto the scene as a painter. His goal with this piece was to represent the human form naturally and not to have it appear
awkward. However,...show more content...
Van Gogh's unique brush strokes and color techniques gives texture to the sky, trees and ground. Although there is no illusion of movement
because of the straight brush strokes he used this painting gives off a calming sense to the viewer. Fig. 3 Vase with Daisies 1886 The painting
titled Vase with Daisies gives off mixed feelings because of the colors and the painting techniques that were used. Van Gogh incorporated vibrant
yellows, blues, and red in the daisy arrangement but for the background and stems he used a vast amount of dark browns and greens. The brush
strokes he used varied from fine and straight to bold and wavy. The appearance of this painting is a bit messy because of the various styles he
integrated. His brush strokes also appear to be going in various directions so there is no uniform to the painting. This painting gives an insight to
the dark path Van Gogh was headed down as he began to lose himself. Fig. 4 Vegetable Gardens in Montmartre 1887 Vegetable Gardens in
Montmartre was one of the various pieces that Van Gogh created while at Montmartre. The colors Van Gogh used in this piece were brighter and
lighter than the dull colors he often used in previous paintings. He incorporated various shades of blue and added complements of red, green and
yellow. Van Gogh integrated new ways of painting in this piece including shorter brush strokes and dots of color. The shorter broken brush strokes can
beautifully be seen in

Biography of Vincent Van Gogh What drove Vincent Van Gogh, born March 30,1853, to his mental illness and suicide? Could it have been the
many things he tried, but failed at in his life? He failed in many different careers, in love, and even his artwork. Van Gogh sold only one painting his
entire life. Because of his mental illness, he was considered a crazy person. At the age of sixteen, Van Gogh went to go work with his Uncle Vincent,
whom he was named after, as an art dealer at the Goupil and Co. This job had branches not only in Europe, but America also. Vincent was assigned the
branch in London. There he got his first rejection in love. He fell in love with the daughter of his landlady. Van Gogh thought her feelings would be

He could not stay in any job he tried, such as a an art dealer, a teacher, or doing missionary work. He felt he had no other way to go in life. He turned
to the most helpless form of employment, being an artist. Theo supported hi decision and influenced him. Their relationship became close and they
began a frequent correspondence. At the end of the winter and during the beginning of the spring, Vincent was going to face yet another rejection from
a woman. He went to visit his parents and met his cousin, Kay. She was a widow with a four–year–old child. Kay was several years older than Van
Gogh was. Van Gogh, who thought he was in love with her, declared hi feelings for Kay. It only turned he off and she never wanted to hear from or
see him again. She left and went back home the next morning. Kay's leaving only made Van Gogh want her even more. He went to Kay's parent's
house to find her. They refused to let him talk to Kay. This made Van Gogh feel even more abandoned and alone. The rest of Vincent's family turned
against him after that, also. Theo was the only one who still cared for him. Once again, Vincent fell in love. This time he was not rejected. His new
love was a prostitute with a child and pregnant with another. Christina, also known as Sein, was ill and smoked cigars. Van Gogh, thirty–years–old at
the time, proposed to marry her. At first they were happy with each other. They had nothing in common except a background of misery. Arguments

Art Analysis: The Rocks By Vincent Van Gogh
The work of art I chose to analyze was from the European Art collection located on the second floor of the Audrey Jones Beck building. The painting
is titled "The Rocks" by Vincent Van Gogh. Personally, i chose a Vam Gogh painting because his art emotionally connects to people by telling a story.
Many artists focus on the realistic concept to relay messages, Van Gogh however, expertly expresses meaning through a cast of colors. Having visited
the Museum of Fine Arts quite often, I found myself most comfortable with this selection. Closely inspecting the canvas, I initially noticed that the
painting was created using a series of thick, short brushstrokes compiled on top of one another almost creating a 3–D effect. Upon first glance you are

His choice of colors are bold and complements each other excellently in a way that ties the painting together. The color selection used for the sky
gives the impression that the air is cool and breezy. If you look closely at the horizon –right side– you will notice a faint blue line in which Van Gogh
uses atmospheric perspective to signify an extended horizon. Throughout this work of art Van Gogh uses an array of dark tints to create shadow
effects which gives the painting realistic characteristics. I found it interesting that he strayed away from solely using the traditional variations of
greens most artists uses when depicting grass and incorporated contrasting browns to imply the grass's dryness. The general tone I took from the
painting was muggy. I felt that maybe it was about to rain or maybe a storm was approaching, which would explain why the theme appears so
gloomy. Then again Van Gogh could have painted the scene to portray how he may have been feeling at the moment, unhappy and remote. The way
the tree reaches into the sky, the size and position of the stones or boulders it rests upon makes me wonder if his location was overlooking the sea or
perhaps some other body of

Descriptive Of The Starry Night
The Starry Night is one of the most famous paintings in the history of western culture. It was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889 and is recognized
as his finest work. This artwork is oil on canvas and is currently in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. An interesting fact about the artwork is that
it is painted from Van Gogh's memory, unlike his other works which are painted outdoor. This painting is the view from the east
–facing window of his
asylum room at Saint–Reme–de–Provence. The view includes the starry sky, cypress tree, village, and hills. "This morning I saw the countryside from
my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big. "wrote Van Gogh.
The first thing I notice in The Starry Night is the sky in the background because it stands out the most. There are many shining stars, the big bright
crescent moon and wind swirls painted throughout the blue sky using contrasting colours like orange, yellow and white. Through the swirling wind,
thick curve lines are flowing across the sky to form this spiral–like formation. Eleven yellow stars which look like huge fireballs lighten the whole art
piece by contrasting with the cool blue, dark night sky that contains a variety of shades of blue and grey. There is also the crescent moon at the top
right–hand corner that is bigger and emits an even brighter light compared to the rest of the stars. Next, I notice the giant cypress tree on the left side
because of how its proportion is a lot bigger than everything else in the rest of the painting. It blocks out part of the sky and the village located at the
bottom. The village houses are tiny and painted in the shade. It is compact and is close to the hills and its surrounding objects which makes the houses
blend in and become unnoticeable.
Many elements and principles are portrayed in this art piece. To begin with, the first thing I see and grabs my attention is the swirling wind. Rhythm
and Movement can be seen and it creates a flow to the rest of the painting in which leads your eyes to follow along the path of the swirl and brings
you to the next subject. It allowed me to view the art piece up to down and left to right, as I started from the swirl to the stars

Authors and Artists Essay A life full of color ranging from the darkest black to the brightest yellow and days of loneliness without the company of
another person is what gave Vincent van Gogh dedication to his artwork through tons of time and unwavering compassion towards his works.
Through a tough life experienced many times in the wilderness, Gary Paulsen uses his past experiences to personally reach the creative minds of

Authors and artists are similar because both utilize elements of their crafts, show perspective in their works, and draw inspiration from their own
lives. First, the elements of their craft support the ideas they are trying to express one of these ideas that is similar between both of them is by
using certain words and colors to display feelings, details, ideas, and actions nonverbally. "...without a warning, the engine coughed, roared
violently for a second, and then died" (Paulsen, Hatchet 24). This is personification because humans cough and eventually die, so these attributes
are being used to describe an engine of a plane. In Vincent's painting of Dr. Gatchet (one of his earliest paintings), he used colors such as dark blue,
dark green, tan, brown and dirty white, depicted in a very sad and depressed state (Bucks and Holub, 5, 12, and 13), while after he lived in Paris,
he started using brighter colors consisting of bright green, blue, yellow, pink, white, and red as shown in his portrait of Pere Tanguy that includes a
bunch of colorful Japanese paintings in the background (Bucks and Holub, 13, 14, and 17). Vincent's earliest paintings before he moved to Paris
consisted of very dark and gloomy colors and pictures of sad people and things with no real meaning. But after he started living in Paris, he painted
with bright colors depicting scenes of nature and architecture and murals and happy people. These pieces of textual and visual

Brilliance of Van Gough's Work The Starry Night
Vincent Van Gough is one of the most well known artists of all time, and one of his most popular paintings, The Starry Night, is an expression of his
mystical vision. Vincent Willem Van Gogh was born in The Netherlands in 1853, he was a mentally plagued man but in his times of clarity produced
works of art that to this day continue to astound people (Frank P.375).The Starry Night is oil on canvas landscape painting that Van Gough painted

The brush strokes and variation of shades of color that Van Gogh is known for creates a texture that make the painting seem rough but soft at the same
time.
Van Gough uses the elemental pieces of art to form the principle of his design. Swirls in the sky give the feeling of movement as the wind is
blowing while looking over the town on a cold night. The swirls in the sky also draw the viewer to move their eyes across the painting and look
down at the town and then back to the large cypress tree. This is Van Gough's use of asymmetrical balance and use of variety to let the viewer take
in all the elements of the painting. The different sizes or proportion of the stars, town and cypress tree are all perceived different in real life, but Van
Gough uses size to draw attention toward and away from objects while the similar brush stokes create a sense of rhythm and unity between all of
them. "Connecting earth and sky is the flame like cypress, a tree traditionally associated with graveyards and mourning" MoMA 35). The cypress tree
is the largest object in the painting and gives emphasis to it that draws the viewer's attention.
My first impression of The Starry Night is that it is a nice picture of the stars at night, but after doing research and studying the painting I have a new
appreciation for it. Van Gough in response to this painting said, "Looking at the stars always makes me dream. Why, I ask myself, shouldn't the
shining dots of the sky be as

Vincent Van Gogh was born into a middle–class family in the Netherlands. Known for his artistic talent, Van Gogh's life still remains one of the

During the process, Gaugin would eventually try to stop Van Gogh, but unfortunately he would only end up just cutting a portion of his own ear lobe

religion and strictness, he did have some problems of his own he needed to deal with. Vincent had a bad temper, was always very emotional, and did
not think so highly of himself. He lacked self–esteem. Between the ages of seven to eleven, Vincent was taught at home by a governess. This

Vincent Van Gogh; a well known name by most and a highly reputable figure amongst painters and other artists, he showed his true talent and
passion for the arts in his short career, a career which only lasted ten years (Preble 117). As we know, it takes a tremendous amount of effort,
awareness and creativity to convey your emotions, thoughts and feelings through your work. Here, we will attempt to construe his feelings through
his work and also begin to view and understand things the way Van Gogh did. The painting, from the 1880's is that of a night's sky composed of oil

Van Gogh also used a unique technique in this work that not many other painters had attempted before his time; he used both organic and geometric
shapes. The houses in the painting are very geometrically shaped, with triangular roofs and square windows and doors. The hills, mountains and trees
however are especially organic with soft curves and round edges.
By using different sizes and proportions, Van Gogh added contrast and variety to this painting. He proportioned the tree larger than the village and
stars to show dominance, while also using a variety of elements such as the houses, wind, stars and trees to keep the viewers interest. After all keeping
our interest is one of the strengths of this work.
To interpret The Starry Night and the feelings it can provoke or evoke from oneself you can observe it from more than one point of view. It can be
perceived as a feeling of loneliness or coldness. It may also be seen as a disruption arising during a quite time or just as a sense of plenty of energy.
At a first looked at this painting you do not believe there was a significant meaning to this particular piece. After having read more on Van Gogh and
watching videos on his life we view it differently, we see it as a significant milestone in his life. In one video we watched in class it showed a scene,
which to me represented The Starry Night, about a place where he often went to visit. Also, after hearing about the

Its naturalistic and down–to–earth treatment of its subject matter, most commonly landscapes, has its roots in the French Realism of Camille Corot and
others. Post–Impressionism is a period of art that was influenced by Impressionism, but the artists took their art in other directions. Van Gogh's early
period includes all his work from 1879–1885. In this period he painted The Potato Eaters, which is commonly referred to as his first important
picture. This is a period where van Gogh is trying to convey peasant life to the viewer, and he makes use of a very dark palette. He then studies at
the academy in Antwerp where he is forced to draw from plaster casts and to adopt academic principles which will affect his later works. Next came
the Paris period. There Vincent learned from virtually every major artist there. During this period he creates numerous self–portraits, still lifes, and
cityscapes. Also during this period, his style shifted from the darker manner characteristic to a post–impressionist style heavily influenced by
divisionism. Divisionism is where color is separated into dots or patches applied directly to the canvas. Then in February of 1888 began the Alres
period. This is the period of his mature works and many of his most famous paintings. During this period he begins to suffer from attacks of dementia.
Afterwards he is hospitalized. During this period he painted Starry Night.

Van Gogh used the simplicity of the Japanese forms combined with his use of primary colors in many of his paintings (Stokstad 1038). Van Gogh's

His first drawings from Etten are still very clumsy, but in a few months a great improvement is noticeable, and the progress becomes amazing as
soon as he had settled in The Hague (after a row with his father about his refusal to go to church at Christmas). Here he had some help from a very
good painter, called Anton Mauve, who also gave him some painting lessons. In the two years that Van Gogh spent in The Hague (1882

produced some two hundred drawings, most of which are very characteristic figure studies, either after the woman who shared his life in The
Hague, Sien Hoornik, or after men and women from an old people's home, but there are also excellent landscapes, such as the views of the gardens
and meadows behind his house. One of the most famous of his figure studies is the seated nude, titled Sorrow, for which Sien had sat as a model.
This portrait, of which he also made a lithograph, is typical for what his ideal in drawing was; he wanted to achieve more than mere technical
perfection: his real aim was expression. He wanted to express the misery of the poor people with whom he was surrounded, and also their dignity. He
admired the wood engravings of The Graphic, buying and collecting as many as he could, especially its "Heads of the People,"

his work is enormous. Starry Night is one of the most well known images in modern culture as well as being one of the most replicated and sought

One may begin to ask what features within the painting are responsible for its ever growing popularity. There are actually several main aspects that
intrigue those. Firstly here is the night sky filled with swirling clouds, stars ablaze with their own luminescence, and a bright crescent moon.
Although the features are exaggerated, this is a scene we can all relate to, and also one that most individuals feel comfortable and at ease with. This
sky keeps the viewer's eyes moving about the painting, following the curves and creating a visual dot to dot with the stars. This movement keeps the
onlooker involved in the painting while the other factors take hold.Secondly below the rolling hills of the horizon lies a small town. There is a
peaceful essence flowing from the structures. Perhaps the cool dark colors and the fiery windows spark memories of our own warm childhood years
filled with imagination of what exists in the night and dark starry skies. The center point of the town is the tall steeple of the church, reigning

occupy appears to project forward in jagged shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition teeters on
an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism
and abandonment of perspective in goodwill of a level two–dimensional picture of a plane.
On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist, however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo
Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh's drawings are appreciated without the need for bright colours,
drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal,
although he often mixed mediums as well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and materials. However,
Van Gogh's methods of 'drawing' are very different to Pablo Picasso's.
Pablo Picasso's way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time compared to Vincent Van Gogh's method. Drawing
allowed van Gogh to capture light and images more quickly than with painting and

Vincent Van Gogh Essay
Vincent Van Gogh Although he is almost unknown during his brief lifetime, Vincent Willem van Gogh, was born Mar. 30, 1853, in Groot
–Zundert, the
Netherlands and is today probably the most known and appreciated representative of art. His work became an important bridge between the 19th
and 20th centuries; and it was particularly influential . Van Gogh clearly showed artistic talent even as a child, but neither he or his family imagined
that painting would become his career. Instead, at the age of 16, he went to work for Goupil and Company, an art gallery with which one of his
uncles had long been associated with; he was dismissed in 1876. Other false starts included a job in a Dordrecht bookstore during the spring of 1877,

During the winter of 1885–86 Van Gogh studied at the academy in Antwerp, where he was forced to draw from plaster casts and to adopt academic
principles that did not suit him. He moved to Paris, where he lived with Theo his brother. The Paris period (March 1886–February 1888) is extremely
important because it enabled Vincent to see and to hear discussed work of virtually every major artist there. Although van Gogh admired many.
During these years van Gogh's style shifted from the darker manner characteristic of his Nuenen period to a postimpressionist style heavily influenced
by divisionism . Van Gogh left Paris and moved to Arles in February 1888. His mature work and many of his most famous paintings date from the
ensuing year. In October 1888, Paul Gauguin came to live and work with van Gogh. After only 2 months, however, following the first of Vincent's
attacks of dementia, he punished himself for trying to stab a close friend Gauguin in which he amputated his own earlobe, Gauguin left, having first
summoned Theo from Paris. Thereafter, Vincent was hospitalized until the spring of 1890; he was voluntarily confined in the Asylum of Saint–Paul in
Saint–Remy from May 1889 until May 1890. He continued to paint, however, and in June 1889 executed the Starry Night and the extraordinary
Self–Portrait (Louvre). In the three months following his release from the hospital in May 1890, at the

William Vincent Van Gogh, the Dutch post

Van Gogh was born in the Netherlands, a Protestant pastor rural family, the early years of his staff and the firm has done a broker, also worked as a
missionary mine. He is full of fantasy, love extremes, repeated setbacks and failures in life; he devoted himself to painting the final determination " in

came to Paris and met lots of Impressionist and Neo–Impressionist painter, and exposure to the Japanese ukiyo–e works. The vision changes extend his

From the formal analysis of this painting can be divided into the following three points. From the first composition, the figure is only a pot of
sunflowers and sunflower largest area, indicating that sunflower is the theme of the performance; the whole painting is a visual center and the main
thing. The whole picture is only one countertop and facade. And second, in this painting, Vincent Van Goghused yellow and brown color tone to
created earth tone. He used repainting technique to make the pigment very thick and outstanding of the canvas. 15 different patterns of
sunflowers, or flourishing or wither, explicitly or implicitly, to used golden yellow as the background and orange as the main colors of sunflowers,
while several flower used black to embellished stamens, give us the strong contrast color. Van Gogh Attached great importance to texture, many
brush strokes are brought up, to create a feeling of a flower in full bloom. Especially in the background, cross brush strokes breaking the traditional
rules of composition and strokes. Van Gogh in southern France did "Sunflowers series". In the French, sunflower means "the sun which was falls
on the ground," people tend to see it as a symbol of light and hope. Van Gogh's Sunflowers is not a bright and lively, full of hope and fantasy
sunflowers, its more crazy. Inside Van Gogh's spiritual world, he saw all objects are filled with a kind of life––– a life of repression and the existence
of anti–repression

Descriptive Essay On Vincent Van Gogh

  • 1. Descriptive Essay On Vincent Van Gogh Vincent van Gogh Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on the 30th of March in 1853 and was born in Zundert in the Netherlands, died on July 29 in 1890. His main focus was paintings and his mediums were oil. Most of the time he painted landscapes, cityscapes, figure and scenery. Post–impressionism was his art style. The dimensions of the Starry Night is 2′ 5″ x 3′ 0″
and the painting is located in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Vincent van Gogh painted the Starry Night in 1889 in the post–impressionism period and the genre of the painting is landscape. The painting shows a night sky full of swirls of clouds, stars in the sky look like they are on fire and there is a super bright moon, which dominates the painting. The sky keeps the viewer's eyes moving around the painting, this keeps the viewer absorbed in the painting and the sky takes up three–quarters of the painting. Under the moving hills of the horizon is a small town. Where there is a peaceful spirit curving for the buildings. The dark cool colours could be representing memories of our own childhood, which were filled...show more content... There is always light to guide you, because of the beautiful stars in the sky. Van Gogh was finally cured of his many illnesses and he had found his happy place or heaven. He knew that when he was dead he would be at peace and represents this by using the bold colours in the Starry Night. The Starry Night has kind of a weird, he referred to the painting in a letter he send to his brother and called it "exaggerations in terms of composition." He used bight colours which was unusual because of it is a night scene silhouettes would have been more obvious but he used lines. In this landscape painting there is not just one main focus, but there are more points, like the big object on the left, the church, the hills and the swirling Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Who Is Vincent Van Gogh? Vincent van Gogh, a world famous artist from the late nineteenth century, is regarded as a post–impressionistic and early expressionistic artist. His works are full of energy and very expressive such as the Starry Night, Night CafГ© and certainly the Wheatfield with Crows. In one of the letters, which were written by the artist to his younger brother Theo, Van Gogh expressed his sensitivity in some normal scenes. "Last week, I was at Hampton Court to see the beautiful gardens and long avenues of horse chestnuts and lime trees, in the tops of which a multitude of crows and rooks have built their nests" (Letter 70). One could see that the artist was a sensitive, emotional and passionate person. Every bird, tree, flower or person around him would stimulate his emotion and thoughts. When looking at the Wheatfield, it is generally associated with sadness because of the tragedy that happened after he finished the painting. The general reception of the painting is related to personal issues of the artist like mentally broke down situation, lack of money and unpopular aesthetic style, which lead to the sadness of the artist. Although personal issues of the artist could affect his product to a certain extent, still, one cannot directly link the emotion of the art piece to his real–life situation. There should be another more persuasive linkage, which could show a better and more direct connection with the art piece. Thus, by analyzing the use of colors, lines, treatment of different Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Vincent Van Gogh Painting Analysis Essay Introduction Vincent Van Gogh was born in Holland in 1853. He was an impressionist painter who was known for his rough beauty, bold use of color and unique techniques. Van Gogh suffered from severe anxiety and a form of mental illness which is apparent in his later pieces. Sadly Van Gogh passed away from a self inflicted gunshot wound in 1890 at age 30. His magnificent works of art were not fully appreciated while he was living; however they have now earned him great respect and appreciation. Fig. 1 The Potato Eaters 1885 The Potato Eaters was one of Van Gogh's early works as he just stepped onto the scene as a painter. His goal with this piece was to represent the human form naturally and not to have it appear awkward. However,...show more content... Van Gogh's unique brush strokes and color techniques gives texture to the sky, trees and ground. Although there is no illusion of movement because of the straight brush strokes he used this painting gives off a calming sense to the viewer. Fig. 3 Vase with Daisies 1886 The painting titled Vase with Daisies gives off mixed feelings because of the colors and the painting techniques that were used. Van Gogh incorporated vibrant yellows, blues, and red in the daisy arrangement but for the background and stems he used a vast amount of dark browns and greens. The brush strokes he used varied from fine and straight to bold and wavy. The appearance of this painting is a bit messy because of the various styles he integrated. His brush strokes also appear to be going in various directions so there is no uniform to the painting. This painting gives an insight to the dark path Van Gogh was headed down as he began to lose himself. Fig. 4 Vegetable Gardens in Montmartre 1887 Vegetable Gardens in Montmartre was one of the various pieces that Van Gogh created while at Montmartre. The colors Van Gogh used in this piece were brighter and lighter than the dull colors he often used in previous paintings. He incorporated various shades of blue and added complements of red, green and yellow. Van Gogh integrated new ways of painting in this piece including shorter brush strokes and dots of color. The shorter broken brush strokes can beautifully be seen in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Vincent Van Gogh Essay Biography of Vincent Van Gogh What drove Vincent Van Gogh, born March 30,1853, to his mental illness and suicide? Could it have been the many things he tried, but failed at in his life? He failed in many different careers, in love, and even his artwork. Van Gogh sold only one painting his entire life. Because of his mental illness, he was considered a crazy person. At the age of sixteen, Van Gogh went to go work with his Uncle Vincent, whom he was named after, as an art dealer at the Goupil and Co. This job had branches not only in Europe, but America also. Vincent was assigned the branch in London. There he got his first rejection in love. He fell in love with the daughter of his landlady. Van Gogh thought her feelings would be mutual,...show more content... He could not stay in any job he tried, such as a an art dealer, a teacher, or doing missionary work. He felt he had no other way to go in life. He turned to the most helpless form of employment, being an artist. Theo supported hi decision and influenced him. Their relationship became close and they began a frequent correspondence. At the end of the winter and during the beginning of the spring, Vincent was going to face yet another rejection from a woman. He went to visit his parents and met his cousin, Kay. She was a widow with a four–year–old child. Kay was several years older than Van Gogh was. Van Gogh, who thought he was in love with her, declared hi feelings for Kay. It only turned he off and she never wanted to hear from or see him again. She left and went back home the next morning. Kay's leaving only made Van Gogh want her even more. He went to Kay's parent's house to find her. They refused to let him talk to Kay. This made Van Gogh feel even more abandoned and alone. The rest of Vincent's family turned against him after that, also. Theo was the only one who still cared for him. Once again, Vincent fell in love. This time he was not rejected. His new love was a prostitute with a child and pregnant with another. Christina, also known as Sein, was ill and smoked cigars. Van Gogh, thirty–years–old at the time, proposed to marry her. At first they were happy with each other. They had nothing in common except a background of misery. Arguments began Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Art Analysis: The Rocks By Vincent Van Gogh The work of art I chose to analyze was from the European Art collection located on the second floor of the Audrey Jones Beck building. The painting is titled "The Rocks" by Vincent Van Gogh. Personally, i chose a Vam Gogh painting because his art emotionally connects to people by telling a story. Many artists focus on the realistic concept to relay messages, Van Gogh however, expertly expresses meaning through a cast of colors. Having visited the Museum of Fine Arts quite often, I found myself most comfortable with this selection. Closely inspecting the canvas, I initially noticed that the painting was created using a series of thick, short brushstrokes compiled on top of one another almost creating a 3–D effect. Upon first glance you are ...show more content... His choice of colors are bold and complements each other excellently in a way that ties the painting together. The color selection used for the sky gives the impression that the air is cool and breezy. If you look closely at the horizon –right side– you will notice a faint blue line in which Van Gogh uses atmospheric perspective to signify an extended horizon. Throughout this work of art Van Gogh uses an array of dark tints to create shadow effects which gives the painting realistic characteristics. I found it interesting that he strayed away from solely using the traditional variations of greens most artists uses when depicting grass and incorporated contrasting browns to imply the grass's dryness. The general tone I took from the painting was muggy. I felt that maybe it was about to rain or maybe a storm was approaching, which would explain why the theme appears so gloomy. Then again Van Gogh could have painted the scene to portray how he may have been feeling at the moment, unhappy and remote. The way the tree reaches into the sky, the size and position of the stones or boulders it rests upon makes me wonder if his location was overlooking the sea or perhaps some other body of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Descriptive Of The Starry Night The Starry Night is one of the most famous paintings in the history of western culture. It was painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1889 and is recognized as his finest work. This artwork is oil on canvas and is currently in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. An interesting fact about the artwork is that it is painted from Van Gogh's memory, unlike his other works which are painted outdoor. This painting is the view from the east –facing window of his asylum room at Saint–Reme–de–Provence. The view includes the starry sky, cypress tree, village, and hills. "This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big. "wrote Van Gogh. The first thing I notice in The Starry Night is the sky in the background because it stands out the most. There are many shining stars, the big bright crescent moon and wind swirls painted throughout the blue sky using contrasting colours like orange, yellow and white. Through the swirling wind, thick curve lines are flowing across the sky to form this spiral–like formation. Eleven yellow stars which look like huge fireballs lighten the whole art piece by contrasting with the cool blue, dark night sky that contains a variety of shades of blue and grey. There is also the crescent moon at the top right–hand corner that is bigger and emits an even brighter light compared to the rest of the stars. Next, I notice the giant cypress tree on the left side because of how its proportion is a lot bigger than everything else in the rest of the painting. It blocks out part of the sky and the village located at the bottom. The village houses are tiny and painted in the shade. It is compact and is close to the hills and its surrounding objects which makes the houses blend in and become unnoticeable. Many elements and principles are portrayed in this art piece. To begin with, the first thing I see and grabs my attention is the swirling wind. Rhythm and Movement can be seen and it creates a flow to the rest of the painting in which leads your eyes to follow along the path of the swirl and brings you to the next subject. It allowed me to view the art piece up to down and left to right, as I started from the swirl to the stars Get more content on HelpWriting.net

First, the elements of their craft support the ideas they are trying to express one of these ideas that is similar between both of them is by using certain words and colors to display feelings, details, ideas, and actions nonverbally. "...without a warning, the engine coughed, roared violently for a second, and then died" (Paulsen, Hatchet 24). This is personification because humans cough and eventually die, so these attributes are being used to describe an engine of a plane. In Vincent's painting of Dr. Gatchet (one of his earliest paintings), he used colors such as dark blue, dark green, tan, brown and dirty white, depicted in a very sad and depressed state (Bucks and Holub, 5, 12, and 13), while after he lived in Paris, he started using brighter colors consisting of bright green, blue, yellow, pink, white, and red as shown in his portrait of Pere Tanguy that includes a bunch of colorful Japanese paintings in the background (Bucks and Holub, 13, 14, and 17). Vincent's earliest paintings before he moved to Paris consisted of very dark and gloomy colors and pictures of sad people and things with no real meaning. Van Gough uses the elemental pieces of art to form the principle of his design. Swirls in the sky give the feeling of movement as the wind is blowing while looking over the town on a cold night. The swirls in the sky also draw the viewer to move their eyes across the painting and look down at the town and then back to the large cypress tree. This is Van Gough's use of asymmetrical balance and use of variety to let the viewer take in all the elements of the painting. The different sizes or proportion of the stars, town and cypress tree are all perceived different in real life, but Van Gough uses size to draw attention toward and away from objects while the similar brush stokes create a sense of rhythm and unity between all of them. "Connecting earth and sky is the flame like cypress, a tree traditionally associated with graveyards and mourning" MoMA 35). The cypress tree is the largest object in the painting and gives emphasis to it that draws the viewer's attention. My first impression of The Starry Night is that it is a nice picture of the stars at night, but after doing research and studying the painting I have a new appreciation for it. A Case Study Of Vincent Van Gogh Rosie Ji Dr. Oltmanns Abnormal Psychology30 October 2017 A Case Study of Vincent Van Gogh One of the most well –known painters in Western Art, Vincent Van Gogh was born into a middle–class family in the Netherlands. Known for his artistic talent, Van Gogh's life still remains one of the greatest mysteries in art history. Despite the awe–inspiring paintings such as The Starry Night and Irises he created while he was alive, he was considered an outcast and lacked a strong positive social support. In fact, his idiosyncratic ways made him infamous for being the "drunken madman" who had cut off his ear and given it as present to a prostitute. 1. Artistic beginnings. As a child, Van Gogh was keen on impressing his father but after his decision to not be a minister, he and his father's relationship fell irrevocably apart. Symptoms of major depression disorder. Although there is much uncertainty surrounding the nature of his mental disorder, many experts hold that he had suffered from major depression. Some symptoms that support this claim are that he had trouble sleeping, felt down most of the time and on most days, had a significantly decreased appetite, and felt guilty perversely. His occupation as an artist did not allow him to have a steady source of income, and he often felt as though he was complete failure as a son, a brother, and an artist. People around him had said that he was lonely, unfriendly, and aloof. This lack of company is undeniably a contributing factor in his depressed mood, further repelling people away from him. . Van Gogh also used a unique technique in this work that not many other painters had attempted before his time; he used both organic and geometric shapes. The houses in the painting are very geometrically shaped, with triangular roofs and square windows and doors. The hills, mountains and trees however are especially organic with soft curves and round edges. By using different sizes and proportions, Van Gogh added contrast and variety to this painting. He proportioned the tree larger than the village and stars to show dominance, while also using a variety of elements such as the houses, wind, stars and trees to keep the viewers interest. After all keeping our interest is one of the strengths of this work. To interpret The Starry Night and the feelings it can provoke or evoke from oneself you can observe it from more than one point of view. It can be perceived as a feeling of loneliness or coldness. In this period he painted The Potato Eaters, which is commonly referred to as his first important picture. This is a period where van Gogh is trying to convey peasant life to the viewer, and he makes use of a very dark palette. He moved to Paris in 1886, living with his devoted brother, Theo, who as a dealer introduced him to artists like Gauguin, Pissarro, Seurat and Toulouse–Lautrec. In the two years that Van Gogh spent in The Hague (1882 –83), he produced some two hundred drawings, most of which are very characteristic figure studies, either after the woman who shared his life in The Hague, Sien Hoornik, or after men and women from an old people's home, but there are also excellent landscapes, such as the views of the gardens and meadows behind his house. One of the most famous of his figure studies is the seated nude, titled Sorrow, for which Sien had sat as a model. This portrait, of which he also made a lithograph, is typical for what his ideal in drawing was; he wanted to achieve more than mere technical perfection: his real aim was expression. Starry Night is one of the most well known images in modern culture as well as being one of the most replicated and sought after prints. One may begin to ask what features within the painting are responsible for its ever growing popularity. There are actually several main aspects that intrigue those. Firstly here is the night sky filled with swirling clouds, stars ablaze with their own luminescence, and a bright crescent moon. Although the features are exaggerated, this is a scene we can all relate to, and also one that most individuals feel comfortable and at ease with. This sky keeps the viewer's eyes moving about the painting, following the curves and creating a visual dot to dot with the stars. This movement keeps the onlooker involved in the painting while the other factors take hold.Secondly below the rolling hills of the horizon lies a small town. Van Gogh and Picasso two of the most famous artists out there and still are to this day. Uncountable books have been published and dedicated to them and their lives and careers of being true artist. Their art has changed the way people view things and the world around them. Vincent van Gogh was one of many artists who self taught himself, who transformed the appearance of Post–Impressionism incessantly. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in goodwill of a level two–dimensional picture of a plane. On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist, however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh's drawings are appreciated without the need for bright colours, drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal, although he often mixed mediums as well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and materials. However, Van Gogh's methods of 'drawing' are very different to Pablo Picasso's. Pablo Picasso's way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time compared to Vincent Van Gogh's method.
