2. ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY
Short story is a short work of fiction.
Fiction is prose about an imagine
events and characters.
Character- is a person, or sometimes
even animal, who takes part in the
action of a short story or other
literary work.
Protagonist- the main character
Antagonist- the character that
opposes the protagonist.
Types of Characters
3. Setting- is the time and place in which
the story happens.
Plot- is a series of events and characters
actions that relate to the central
conflict.
4. Five Essential Parts of Plot
1.Introduction/Exposition- the beginning of
the story where the characters and setting are
revealed
2.Rising Action- This is where the events in the
story becomes complicated and the conflict in
the story in the story is revealed. (Events
between the introduction and climax)
5. 4.Falling Action- this is where the events and
complications begin to resolve themselves.
(The events between climax and ending)
5.Ending/Resolution- this is the final outcome
or untangling of events in the story.
3.Climax- the highest point of interest and the
turning point of the story. The reader wonders
what will happen next; will the conflict be
resolved or not?
7. Conflict- is the struggle between people or
things in a short story. The main character is
usually on one side of the central conflict.
Two types of Conflict
External Conflict- a struggle with a force outside
one's self.
Man vs man Man vs nature
Man vs society Man vs supernatural
Man vs technology
Internal Conflict- a struggle with a force inside
one's self.

8. Point of View- the perspective from which the story is
told.
Types of Point of View
First Person- Using pronouns I and we in teeling the
story.
Third Person-Using pronouns she, he, and they.

Theme- is the central idea or belief in the story. The
message the writer is trying to convey through the
story.
