Before The Dawn…..
1978-79: Launch of a Bulletin Board
System (BBS) such as Usenet to inform
friends of meetings, make announcements
and share information through postings.
1969: First major US commercial
Internet service provider for the
public, CompuServe, which
dominated the field through the
1980s.
1971: The first
email was
delivered.
1984: Introduction of the
Prodigy online service which
grew to become the second-largest
online service provider
in 1990, with 465,000
subscribers compared with
CompuServe's 600,000
1985-1993:
-America Online (AOL)
service was launched.
-Advent of the World Wide
Web by CERN.
-Tripod opened as a
community online for college
students and young adults.
-CERN donated the WWW
technology to the world.
7. The Dawning
1994: Beverly Hills Internet (BHI) started Geocities, which allowed users to create
their own websites modelled after types of urban areas.
Internet as the Information Superhighway: More than 1,500 Web servers were
online
1997: One million sites on the web. Advent of Blogging. SixDegrees.com for
users to create profiles and list friends. AOL Instant Messenger for instant
chat.
1998 – 2000: Google opened as a major Internet search engine and index.
Launch of Friends Reunited, one of the first online social network to achieve
prominence. 70 million computers were connected to the Internet.
2001-2003: Wikipedia was started. Apple started selling iPods.
Friendster, a social networking website, was opened to the public in the
U.S. and grew to 3 million users in three months. MySpace and LinkedIn
were launched.
2004: Facebook was started for students at Harvard College. Podcasting
began on the Internet. Flickr image hosting website opened.

social network worldwide
