The Kings usually ride on one of the boats - the Suphanahong or the
Golden Swan - when they travel to the royal riverside temples to do some
important things, like offering yellow robes (จีวร) to monks after the end
of Buddhist Lent.

Supong: That’sagoodquestion.Theprocessiontookplaceagainonthatdaytomark
King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th anniversary accession to the throne. He
has been King since June 9, 1946, and he is the longest reigning King in
Thai and world history.
Richard : Wow! I can imagine how exciting it was to watch the procession.
Supong : You’reright!ThousandsofpeoplelinedthebanksoftheChaoPhrayaRiver.

25 nations watched the procession at the Royal Navy Institute (ราชนาวิก
สภา - Ratchanawig Sapa). The procession started at about 4.45 pm. from
the Wasukri Pier near the National Library to the Memorial Bridge.
Richard : Did you join the celebration?
Supong : You bet! I went to see the procession at my uncle’s riverside house where
I had a very good view.
Richard : Lucky you! I missed the chance. Well, how many barges were there in the
procession? And How many men were there in the crew?
Supong : There were 52 barges and 2082 crewmen from the Royal Thai Navy.
Richard : That’s cool. And how long was the procession on the river?
Supong: I think it was over a kilometre long. The barges were gliding over the

people love the King so much?
Supong : Um,maybeit’sbecausehestaysclosetothepeopleandlistenstotheirneeds.
He always tries hard to guide his people in how to live happily through
his royal projects and the Sufficient Economic Theory. His theory is very
modern and timeless because it focuses on human development.
For this reason, the United Nations Secretory - General, Kofi Annan,
named him the world’s Development King. On 26 May 2006, Mr Annan
cametoKlaiKungwolPalacetopresenttheKingwithaLifetimeAchieve-
ment Award.
Richard : Oh, really? That’s a great honour for the King and his people. He must be
the first person to win this kind of recognition.
Supong : Yes, he is. His ideas and projects help all Thai people. He is our wish and
we love him very much.
Richard : Let’s follow the King’s Self-Sufficient Theory.
Supong : Good idea.
